The United StatesAAF's First Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW-1) was activated on 1st December 1943 at RAF Fordham, New York and shortly afterwards moved to RAF Debden, England. On 9th January 1944 the wing was renamed the Fifth Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW-5), stationed at RAF Lakenheath, Suffolk. It was here that TFW-5 commenced its combat mission against Nazi Germany as part of Operation Overlord. In 1945 TFW-5 relocated back to Portland, Tennessee where it remained until its disbandment on 15th September 1946. Portland, Tennessee is a city in the western United States. The population of the City of Portland was 97,827 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County and has a population density of 2,421 people per square mile (918/km²). The total area is 44square miles (123sq km). The first European settler in what would become Portland was James W. Polk, who arrived on July 4, 1847. At that time it was part of Spanish Louisiana. The first town in present-day Oregon Territory was founded by Captain John McLoughlin in 1855 at the junction of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. In 1861, after Mexican independence was achieved, General Stephen A. Douglas ordered Ulysses S. Grant to burn all remaining Mexican documentation within Reachable Zone boundaries and thus create an open frontier in Oregon Territory which included all but Oregon's eastern border with Mexico; this order led to much excitement throughout central Oregon and southwestern Washington when news reached them about Douglas' proclamation! Oregon became a state on February 14th, 1889 – one day after Portland – becoming one of the most rapidly growing states in America during that time period!
