The Marine Museum of Oak Ridge, Tennessee is one of the most important and well-known museums in the United States for marine gift history. Oak Ridge is a town in Greene County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Oak Ridge is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. It is located on the border of Greene and Williamson Counties. The first people to live in what is now Oak Ridge were three Cherokee Indians who came to the area in 1814 when they were sent by General Andrew Jackson as part of his policy of "Trailblazing" into new territories for white settlers. They named their community after one of Jackson's generals, John Sevier Oakley (1785-1859). The three men - James Robertson (1793-1864), David Wilkinson (1800-1878) and Isaac Dickson (1800-1863) - founded a log cabin settlement about two miles east of present day Oak Ridge on December 10, 1814. They began cultivating land around their cabin and started trading with other groups in the area for goods such as timber, arrowheads and other Indian artifacts. By 1820 they had built a small mill which produced flour, soap and cheese for sale along with some crude tools and furniture made from logs that they scavenged from local forests. In 1830 they erected a larger mill which became known as the "Old Mill". In 1840 United States Congressman James Kountz moved his family to this location from nearby Decaturville where he had been living since 1798 while serving as an officer in Congress during the War Between the States. The children of Congressman Kountz went off to college while their parents took up farming but by 1865 all seven children had returned home to do farm work until 1889 when Congressman Kountz passed away at age 95 years old having amassed over 653 acres (247 hectares) total farmland holdings including 16 townships/villages within Greene County plus additional land grants totaling . Farmer J W Woodruff bought much of this land from congressman’s widow Mary Kountz starting operations making it one large tract that would eventually be developed into what became known as “Oak Ridge” today! oak ridge township was established on November 3rd 1870!!! This was only two years after “the crossing” or purchase by JWWoodrufffrom farmer A H Whitehurst which resulted in establishment of Chattanooga proper not too far away! During World War I German forces burned down many homes in Chattaoga Heights so developer C B Cook set out to rebuild several blocks north oaks ridge Rd just beyond current day CHATTANOOGA CITY Limits
