Oak Ridge, Tennessee is located in the southeastern corner of Tennessee and is bordered by Kentucky on the north and east, Alabama on the south and west, and Georgia on the southwest. The population was 9 million in 2010. Oak Ridge was founded in 1942 as a wartime research center for plutonium production by General Leslie Groves, then head of Manhattan Project. Today Oak Ridge National Laboratory conducts scientific research in many fields including nuclear medicine, energy security, climate change, medical imaging, materials science and engineering. The first inhabitants of what would become Oak Ridge were Native Americans. The area that now makes up Oak Ridge was first settled by the Cherokee people in the 17th century. In 1792 John Sevier County was created from areas west of Knoxville which had been part of Cherokee Nation until they were ceded to England under Treaty of Hopewell Creek. By 1800 most Cherokees had moved away from central Tennessee because of pressure from white settlers. In 1819 an act provided for a national laboratory to be established at Knoxville so that scientific information gathered at Knoxville could be shared internationally with other nations during the Napoleonic Wars (1804-1815). AfterKnoxville became a national capital in 1825 much work continued at local laboratories before it was decided to relocate to Nashville in 1831 due to concerns about raids by Indian tribes led by Chief Little Turtle against settlers near McGee Bridge on Cumberland River northwest of downtown Nashville. In 1865 Congress passed an act creating three departments within United States Department Of Agriculture: Agricultural Research Service; Plant Protection Service; and Forestry Administration. In 1898 these merged into USDA’s Bureau Of Forestry which became Oak Ridge National Laboratory when it was organized as a separate bureau within USDA following World War I (1914-1945). In 1940 Major General Leslie Groves became Director of Los Alamos National Laboratory where he developed concepts for making plutonium for use as weapons during World War II (1939-1945). After General Groves’ death Party Chairman Franklin D Roosevelt took over leadership at Los Alamos National Laboratory effective January 20th 1944 until his replacement Harry S Truman assumed office on April 12th 1945 becoming America’s first President with nuclear experience.
