The USS Constitution (1801-1805) was a United States Navy ship. She served in the War of 1812, as part of the squadron that included HMS Macedonian and HMS Guerriere. The Constitution was also used in the Battle of Lake Erie on July 12, 1813. In 1814 she participated in the bombardment of Fort Ticonderoga during the Invasion of Canada. On October 14th she sailed for England with Commodore James Kapp's squadron to take part in the blockade of Spanish ports. After an uneventful voyage she arrived off Gibraltar on November 15th and took up station there as part of Admiral Sir John Jellicoe's force which blockaded Spain's Atlantic coast. In December 1815 Constitution sailed for Charleston, South Carolina under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter to take part in Operation Red Cedar which aimed to relieve General Winfield Scott's besieged garrison at Fort Pickens near Mobile Alabama. Unfortunately, after only two months at sea Constitution returned to England without having accomplished its original mission; her stay had been cancelled due to bad weather at sea and shortage of supplies on land. The USS Constitution recommissioned on May 5, 1816 under command of Lieutenant Commander George Fenton and made another attempt at relieving General Scott but this time they were unsuccessful and withdrew back to England before completing their original mission (see Napoleon Bonaparte). On July 3rd, 1817 Constitution entered Plymouth Harbor with a convoy destined for Havana Cuba carrying marines from both France and America under the command of Commodore Nicholas Vitus Blockading Squadron flagship HMS Cerberus . When it became clear that war would not break out between Spain and America, Blockading Squadron changed its target from Havana Cuba to Santiago de Cuba . On September 10th while sailing into Havana harbor Constitution sighted first European ships within Cuban waters - them being Santa Fe privateer schooner captained by Captain Antonio de la Hoz who notified American Commodore Isaac Hull whether he could transport more Marines ashore without risking his shipmates lives A total of 210 Marines disembarked USNS Constitutions maindeck where they were met by local subscribers led by Dragoons captain Fernando Rivera y Larios who gave them dinner then conducted them down onto shore where they spent the night based at Calle Mayor square before finally boarding American sloop Pompano (now a museum ship) for transfer back home . This event is considered one Of The Most Significant Naval Actions Of The War
