Coffee has been a part of the Tennessee culture for over 100 years. In Murfreesboro, one of the earliest coffeehouses was founded in 1892 by Willard Seward and his brother, Augustus Seward. The first business on Main Street near the present day shopping center served refreshments from 6am to 7pm every day. Coffee houses flourished throughout the late 1800s and into the early 1900s. One of the most famous coffeehouses in Nashville was The Peet's Coffee House, which operated from 1886-1914. It is said that Peet'soriginal recipe included ground up turkey instead of beans. In addition to its namesake restaurant, other well-known Nashville coffeehouses include The Well & Garden (1896), The Catbird Room (1901), and Joe's Cafe (1905). These establishments were known for their delicious roasts and smooth drinks that appealed to locals and tourists alike. By 1915, Joe's Cafe had become one of only two remaining online cafes in Nashville after being shuttered by its landlord in 1912. In 1924, Murfreesboro became home to its own coffee company - J&J Coffee Company - which continued to serve delicious cupcakes until it closed in 1984. However, some of the earliest examples of coffee brewing can be found in 1852 when a group of Dutchmen set up a small plantation near what is now downtown Murfreesboro. The first commercial coffee roaster in Murfreesboro was established in 1865 by J.P. McConnell and his brothers, who began serving customers at the Elks Club on Broadway. By 1875, three businesses - McConnell's Coffee House, the Cumberland Coffee House, and Mr. King's - were all open and selling coffee with a variety of flavors. The early 1800s were a time when most people ate only animal-based protein ( chiefly hay) and vegetables were either not available or not affordable enough to provide much cuisine other than subsistence level food sources. This changed around 1840 when Nashville became an important cultural center due to its location on the Mississippi River and growing cotton industry which provided necessary income for families living in poverty. As more people moved into town and started consuming more vegetable based foods as well as meat products, prices for goods such as coffee increased which made it difficult for many small farmers to keep up with demand. Consequently, starting around 1850 one could purchase 1/2 pound of ground coffee at $1 per pound from local merchants or process their own beans at home using an old French press or Dutch oven methods
Murfreesboro is a town in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,401 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The town was founded in 1819 and named for General James Murfreesboro, who fought in the Mexican–American War and was brevetted brigadier general by President Ulysses S. Grant. The first post office in Murfreesboro was established on December 12, 1819, under the name of Battle Creek. It served as the eastern terminus of a stagecoach line from Nashville to Chattanooga run by Elijah Hicks and others. On October 15, 1827, a new post office called Northward was established at what is now downtown Murfreesboro after Majestic Tavern near that intersection had become insolvent and failed to meet requirements for a mail stop due to its location on an important road connecting Nashville with Chattanooga. The first postmaster there was Samuel Gentry Jr., who served until he resigned because he could not get mail delivered to his house due to Indians raiding his property near milepost 5 on the route between those two cities on various pretexts during the Indian Removal Act of 1830 (the last time this occurred). In 1835 John Maney organized a Methodist church in what is now downtown Murfreesboro which became one of America's largest Methodist denominations when it began preaching throughout Tennessee in 1837-38; it has since grown into one of the world’s largest religious denominations with over 1 billion adherents worldwide (more than any other religion). In 1865 Jepson & Fenton built a gristmill on present day Elm Street just south of Main Street; this mill remains operational today with flour being ground both for local markets throughout Marshall County as well as shipment all over Tennessee and beyond.. In 1870 citizens voted to change their name from Battle Creek to Murfreesboro based upon suggestions made by Gen Andrew Johnson during his presidential campaign tour through Tennessee that year.. After much discussion it was decided that “Murfy” would be more appropriate given its quick pronunciation – thus becoming one of America’s most popular tourist destinations for Appalachian mountain tourism beginning in earnest during World War II when military personnel eager for picturesque settings along Route 66 also discovered this community while passing through nearby Beech Grove Cemetery located about three miles east/northwest of downtown Murfreesboro
