Murfreesboro is a city in southernTennessee, United States. The population was 97,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) located in Murfreesboro was founded in 1938 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Second New Deal and grew into one of the largest public water providers in the United States with over 200 miles (320 km) of pipeline carrying water to more than 2 million people. The first European settlement in what is now Murfreesboro took place when Scotsman Allan McKay built a trading post on the present site of downtown in 1796. The area that now includes downtown was laid out by surveyor John Sevier about 1805-1807 as part of a plan to make way for future Nashville growth. In 1819, James Robertson bought land adjacent to what is now Vine Street from David Lindsay and laid out a town called Enterprise on it, which included some buildings still standing today including the Robertson building now known as City Hall Annex. In 1827, Rutherford Boggs organized a group of men called "The Pioneers" to explore new territory west of Nashville and they set off from their farmhouse on West End Avenue near where First Baptist Church stands today. Their journey led them past what is now Vine Street and upriver until they reached Kingston Road just outside present-day Murfreesboro limits; this location became known as "Boggs' Landing." They named their new town after General James Robertson, who had sent them along as scouts during the Mexican–American War years earlier. The first permanent settler arrived in November 1830 – Alexander Schermerhorn from Massachusetts – when he erected a log cabin at what is now Fifth Avenue and Locust Streets within present-day Murfreesboro limits; Schermerhorn made his home until his death about two decades later at age 80 years old according to local history books published around 1957 or 1958.. After some debate among settlers over whether or not to name their town after General Sam Houston because Houstons forces had helped suppress an American Indian uprising at Carrickoga several weeks earlier, voting resulted in Chattanooga being chosen instead due to its strategic location between Kentucky and Tennessee).
