Murfreesboro, Tennessee is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. Murfreesboro is part of the Nashville metropolitan area and is located on the Cumberland River. The town of Murfreesboro was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1814. The first post office in Murfreesboro was established in 1824. In 1868, John Sayers became the first white settler in what is now Murfreesboro when he moved from Knoxville to purchase land near present-day downtown. By 1880, many other settlers had moved into the area and the name "Murfreesboro" began to be used for all of Davidson County. A water tower and pipeline were built around 1910 to provide drinking water for residents of neighboring cities including Chattanooga and Roanoke Rapids. The pipelines were abandoned after World War II because of bombings by the Soviet Union. In 1961, a tornado touched down near downtown Murfreesborne while causing no damage but leaving several hundred people homeless; this event helped spur development around that time which included new businesses and residences as well as a new public library building that opened in 1984 across from City Hall (now known as First Baptist Church). In 2007, murphreestown's largest event ever occurred when an NCAA Division I men's basketball game between Vanderbilt University and Middle Tennessee State University was held at FedExForum Stadium; attendance reached over 20,000 people making it one of the largest live events ever staged in Davidson County outside of metropolitan Nashville proper. Since 1975 there has been an annual blues festival which features many local blues artists with proceeds going towards various charity programs throughout Metro Nashville
