Murfreesboro is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County. The town of Murfreesboro was founded by General Andrew Jackson on November 4, 1814 as a trading post on the Cumberland River. On December 1, 1815, Jackson established the first municipal government in what would become Tennessee and named it for his old home state of Virginia. In 1821, Murfreesboro became an incorporated town with a mayor-council form of government and began to grow rapidly as a center for trade and transportation on the Cumberland River. By 1830, Murfreesboro had been renamed "Morgantown" after its founder's plantation in Virginia. A cotton gin was built in Morgantown in 1836 and soon became one of the most important commercial centers in Tennessee. By 1860, Murfreesboro had reached its peak as an industrial center with cotton plantations and mills operating along both banks of the Cumberland River. However, during the American Civil War (1861–1865), Murfreesboro saw heavy fighting throughout much of Davidson County – particularly along the riverbanks – contributing significantly to its loss of life (approximately 65% compared to Nashville’s 12%).
