Murfreesboro is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 32,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County and home to the University of Tennessee at Murfreesboro. The city was founded in 1815 by Colonel John Sevier and named after General Andrew Johnson's beloved wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. The first permanent settler in what is now Murfreesboro were Methodist missionaries led by Reverend David Brewster in 1816. They built a small cabin on the then present site of downtown Murfreesboro. A few years later they started to plant cotton plantations west of town and this early community prospered until 1831 when the American Civil War began. During the war, many Confederate soldiers camped around town enjoying easy access to food and shelter while their homes were destroyed or looted by Union forces. This forced some civilians to flee their homes which also caused businesses and churches to close for lack of customers or workers during wartime; these closures helped contribute to economic decline that followed postwar Reconstruction (1894-1913). In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his army from Chattanooga through Murfreesboro towards Nashville on his way southward during the Civil War campaign known as Operation Crossroads. As he passed through town on his march into central Tennessee he ordered his men not to loot but rather leave everything they found behind them - an example that would be repeated throughout much of battlefront north Tennessee where General Forrest operated unchecked without orders from higher up. ThisOrdeal has been called "the greatest military disaster since Sherman" because it resulted in great losses for Confederate troops and large quantities of valuable equipment being taken home with them as well as vast amounts of human desperately needed supplies which never reached their destination due to available transportation routes being closed off by Union forces loyal to Grant instead... The closure of major eastern supply roads during this time allowed Union armies under Ulysses S Grant unrestricted access into southern Tennessee meaning muchneeded foodstuffs such as flour became unavailable for soldiers fighting in what was left of Confederate territory following hostilities ended on April 9th 1865 according to historian Jesse Helms...Many residents who had remained within Confederate lines fled before General Forrest’s arrival--leaving behind any personal property--and returned once Sherman arrived two days later...This event marks one point in history when southern Tennesseans successfully resisted federal efforts at re-establishment of order following the civil war....Aftermath: Many people who had remained within Confederate lines fled before General Forrest’s arrival—leaving behind any personal property—and returned once Sherman arrived two days later...This event marks one point in history when southern Tennesseans successfully resisted federal efforts at re-establishment of order following the civil war.... In 1915 Murfreesboro was renamed "John F Kennedy Airport" after President John F Kennedy who served here from 1940-1944 The origins date back even further than that – there are stories about traders travelling downriver from Chattanooga coming across Native Americans fishing near what is now downtown Murfreesboro on Thursdaydays long ago! These early settlers would trade goods with local tribes along the riverbanks before setting out again tomorrow morning paddle upstream all day long! John Sevier himself may have been instrumental in establishing Downtown Murfreesordan – he donated land for its creation including 5 acres (2 ha) just east side OF Main Street opposite today’s Federal Reserve building back then too! And yes sirree – you can still see those trees right there next ToMain Street TODAY! =) Today's downtown area was established primarily thanks 2nd Ward Mayor Lonnie Bunch & 1st Ward Councillor Donny Ladds working closely w/City Manager Ron Heflin whose vision helped bring new life Downtown back in 2013!!
