Mount Juliet is a small town in the Shelby County, Tennessee area. It was founded in 1802 by General Andrew Jackson and settlers from the surrounding counties of Fayette, Morgan, and Williamson. The community became known for its apple orchards and huckleberry bushes. In 1916, Mount Juliet was incorporated as a city. Today, it has a population of about 1,500 people. The first glimpse of Mount Juliet can be seen on February 14th, 1802 when General Andrew Jackson's forces arrived at the mouth of the Cumberland River to find what they thought were hostile Cherokee Indians living near what is now downtown Mount Juliet. The Cherokee had earlier been expelled from Tennessee by Jackson's father in 1795 after they unsuccessfully uprising against British rule during the American Revolution. After discovering that there were no hostile Cherokee present, Jackson ordered his men to burn any buildings found within blocks of where he would eventually establish his new settlement at Fort Pillow on Lake Vermilion Island. Jackson named his new community for himself –Mount Juliet – in honor of his mother (1762-1837) and her husband (1756-1827) Major John Sevier III who fought with General Washington in the Battle of Yorktown over Virginia's independence from England. Sevier also served as governor of Tennessee from 1796 to 1800 under President George Washington and played an important role in helping create Knox County which included Mount Juliet along with other settlements around Sugarcreek Creek on the edge of Clarksville Township northwest of Nashville today. In 1819, following years of development work led by James Kountz Sr., founder and justice commissioner for Shelby County until 1824; Mount Juliet became one of two counties created within Knox County when it was organized on December 12th, 1819 following Orleans Parish's secession from Louisiana). As part as part Knox County’s growth into one of central Tennessee’s largest county governments since its creation; Meigs & Wickersham Proprietary School District No.#8 acquired property east side Historic Courthouse Block #1 adjoining Ft Pillow Road April 6th 1888 thenceforth Known as "Old Courthouse" till finally sold September 15th 1926 Notable events/people associated with Mount Juliet include: James Kountz Sr., founder & justice commissioner for Shelby County until 1824; Andrew Jackson who settled here in 1802; General Joseph Wheeler who commanded Federal forces at Fort Pillow 1865-1866; Statesman David Henderson 1865-1867; James Kountz Jr.(DDS), son James Kountz Sr.'s nephew 1850 - 1907 Barry Sanders age 53 when elected Mayor Mayors office 1966 thru 1974
