In Mount Juliet, Tennessee, the military has a long and proud history. From World War II to the present day, the troops of the Department of Defense have made their presence felt in this community. The town was founded in 1827 as an agricultural center on the Cumberland Plateau. The first military installation in Mount Juliet was Fort Loudoun, which was built in 1836 by General Andrew Johnson. By 1865, Fort Loudoun had been replaced by Camp Campbell, which served as a training ground for Union soldiers during the American Civil War. After the war ended, Camp Campbell became home to Confederate forces loyal to South Carolina Gov. Andrew Johnson. In 1865, Union forces burned downCamp Campbell and destroyed all its equipment before withdrawing from Mount Juliet. Mount Juliet formally became a town on July 1, 1924 when it joined Knox County. The first mayor of Mount Juliet was Wm. Hinson Jr., who served from 1924-1945. At that time, only men could vote in local elections and there were no women until 1970 when they came into existence as citizens of Knox County through an amendment to the Constitution passed by referendum. Today’s military installations in Mount Juliet include Camp Beall Army Reserve Center (opened October 2nd 2009), Camp Humphreys Marine Corps Base (opened February 17th 2016),Fort Donelson National Military Park (opened May 9th 2020) and Fort Pickett National Military Park (opened March 13th 2021).

Since 1970 most residents have resided within the limits of Mount Juliet Elementary School which serves students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.

It began as a small farming community in 1892 and became an important center for coal mining and other businesses during the early 20th century. Mount Juliet was named for the mountain that overlooked it. The first permanent settlement in what is now Mount Juliet was made by farmers who arrived from central Kentucky in 1892. By 1902, the town had grown to include several businesses and 300 residents. The coal industry played a large role in the development of Mount Juliet, which became one of the most important communities in northeastern Davidson County. In 1918, Mineola Mines merged with two others to form First Coal Company Limited, which would be one of the largest coal companies in America until its bankruptcy in 1970. Mount Juliet experienced some difficult times during World War II. Many people were drafted into military service but few were able to return home because of wartime labor shortages. The war led to a decrease in production at Mineola Mines and many workers left town; however, many returned after hostilities ended and founded new businesses around town. In 1951, mine operators merged with three others to form National Coal Corporation; this company would become one of the most powerful mines on Wall Street during the 1960s and 1970s before going bankrupt again in 1990. Since 2000, much progress has been made to revitalize Mount Juliet – including plans for a library and new housing developments along Highway 231 – although there are still some challenges ahead such as inadequate funding for infrastructure projects across Davidson County overall
Mount Juliet was a small mountain in the southeastern corner of Tennessee. It is now part of the city of Chattanooga.
