The United States Army deployed a gift to the town of Mount Juliet, Tennessee on November 5, 1861. The gift was an artillery piece, known as the “Hannibal”. The Hannibal was donated by General George B. McClellan and was used in the American Civil War. It is now on display at Fort Knox National Military Park in Kentucky. Mount Juliet is located near Knoxville, Tennessee and began to grow as a town due to its proximity to the military installations in that city and country. By 1861, Mount Juliet had a population of around 100 people and was home to two stores and one blacksmith shop. The local militias were responsible for defense of the area against any attack from Confederate forces. On November 5th, 1861, General George Buel McClellan ordered all Union units across the Potomac River into battle against Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. Lieutenant Colonel Charles Hurlbut organized a detachment of artillerymen from Company A 1st Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment who transported the Hannibal cannonball guns overland from Winchester, Virginia to join in the battle at Seven Pines Ridge near Chantilly Junction on November 12th. This event would become known as “The Battle of Antietam” and led to Confederate casualties totaling over 6500 men killed or wounded including President Abraham Lincoln (who died days later). In 1865, Union troops abandoned Mount Juliet following their victory at Appomattox Court House which ended Reconstruction in America south of the Mason-Dixon Line. So much so that only a few buildings remain today within walking distance of downtown Chattanooga!

Mount Juliet is a small town in Sevier County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,073 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Mount Juliet is a farming community with a main industry being agriculture. The early history of Mount Juliet can be traced back to 1802 when an order from General Andrew Jackson called for the construction of a road through Sevier County connecting Nashville and Memphis. The first structures in the community were log cabin homes built by farmers in 1804. By 1830, there were 10 dwellings and 2 churches in the town. In 1836, Mount Juliet became one of 12 original municipalities within the new county of Shelbyville which was created from parts of Davidson and Sumner counties after Tennessee seceded from Kentucky on January 1, 1836. In 1840, two years before his death, Jackson ordered that all public buildings in Mount Juliet be replaced with stone barracks because he feared that Confederate forces would take over the small town during the American Civil War. The last settler to leave Mount Juliet was John Dickson who left in 1865 after his family's land had been confiscated by Union troops during what is known as "the Severed Hand Raid". The post office opened on April 15, 1850, and served until it was discontinued on November 20th 1906 due to lack of mail traffic between Memphis and Sevier County. A new post office opened on December 6th 1907 serving as both Hurst’s Store (later Crossroads) general store and also becoming home to many schoolchildren who attend Hurst’s School until 1958 when it closed down due to financial difficulties; however some classes continued right up until 1978 when it merged into Clinton Middle School where all students now attend unitedly under one roof). A “mountain man” restaurant operated at 327 Main Street from 1949-1958 but closed down due to low attendance rates; however remnants remain today as Hope Springs Grille which serves lunch daily except Monday days when dinner is served instead
