When Morristown, Tennessee was settled in 1819, it was a small town of about eighty families. The main industry then was raising livestock, and coffee was not yet introduced to the area. But in 1847, when John Fetterman founded the first Dutch-owned coffee plantation in Tennessee, he started growing coffee for export. By 1850, much of the southeastern United States had become addicted to coffee and trade services were necessary to bring goods back and forth between ports throughout America. Fetterman's beans became so popular that he decided to start a company exporting his beans all over the world. In 1865, Fetterman sold his business toGeorge Peabody & Sons Coffee Company. At this point, Morristown's major industry had changed from agriculture to manufacturing – but it would remain an important center for local coffee production until at least World War II.

The Morristown community was established in 1815 when settlers from Roanoke Island arrived in what is now Robertson County. Early's attack resulted in heavy losses on both sides; consequently, much of central Robertson County remained loyal to the Confederacy until well into Reconstruction era following the war. During that time period many businesses closed down due to lack of customers or competition from new arrivals from surrounding towns such as Knoxville or Nashville. However, many local residents persistently fought for their right to vote and participate in local government despite economic strife exacerbated by Reconstruction timespinctions that favored rural Georgia over urban areas across Tennessee Valley region includingMorristown vernacular architecture popularized within this area as early as 1840 characterized "a modest stone frame house with gabled roof typical of Appalachian homes." Despite challenges faced during those years there were also some impressive accomplishments accomplished during this time including: construction of several major roads (including State Route 9), establishment of schools (including one located within walking distance of downtown Morristony), growth of boatbuilding industry which helped support local economy throughout post-Reconstruction eras through production not only of boats but also rafts/canoes/kayaks etc., erection of several large civic buildings such as courthouse (1894), market square (1902) – all without any public subsidy or assistance from state or federal governments - all thisALL WITHOUT ANY TYPE OF PUBLIC AWARDS OR CONTRIBUTIONS FROM STATE OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENTS!
