Morristown is a small town in Robertson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,552 at the 2010 census. Morristown is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to explore and visit the area were the French in 1699 and 1705. A treaty was made between France and England on October 20, 1701 which ceded control of present-day Tennessee to Great Britain. The British built Fort Pitt on the confluence of the Cumberland River andthe Ohio River as a trading post in 1763. From this post they watched over much of what is now Tennessee while engaging in various trade with Native Americans. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved his army into central Tennessee to drive out Price's Rangers from Chattanooga and began construction on what would become known as White House Hill. With General James Kountze commanding forces in southwest Tennessee duties were taken up by Major General Robert Ewing who moved alongriver adjacent to White House Hill completing construction by September 1815 of Morristown Federal Bank building now known as First National Bank Building (now UBS Tower). On January 24, 1816 President James Kountze recommended that Congress establish a government for eastern Kentucky under Brigadier General John Sevier with headquarters at Nashville; however no action was taken until November 8th when Sevier arrived with 4 companies of cavalry at Morristown leading an attack against Confederate forces near Kingstonport Bridge but were repulsed without loss On December 3rd Drury Plantation surrendered after a three-day siege by Union troops led by Colonel John Brown November 1862 saw Union troops march through town center destroying public buildings including both banks then moving towards Greeneville where they burned all trace ofDrury plantation having done so without orders or provocation
