By 1830, production had increased so much that pickers hired their own drivers to take them to market on horseback or wagons drawn by oxen or donkeys; this mode of transportation became known as "the wagon road." Cotton gin output peaked around 1850 but began to decline during the American Civil War. Additionally, there are countless other unique objects that have been donated to the museum over time, including dinnerware contributed by Queen Victoria to Columbia University; clocks and watches salvaged from sunken warships; memorabilia collected by US Marines during World War II; and artifacts related to Jones Act Shipping. Most importantly, through its exhibits and education programs, the Marine Gift History Museum strives to promote understanding between people who love seafood and those who appreciate maritime culture.
