The Morristown Volunteer Infantry was a regiment of the United States Army that served in the Mexican-American War. The regiment was organized on December 12, 1847, atMorristown, Tennessee. On November 25, 1850, it was redesignated the 1st Tennessee Volunteers and on May 6, 1861, it became part of Confederate States of America under General Robert E. Lee. It surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The Morristown Volunteer Infantry Museum is housed in the old barracks adjacent to State Highway 128 in Morristown. This museum contains items related to the history of the regiment as well as artifacts from other units in Morristown during the Mexican-American War and during World War II. There are also displays about American military history and its role in helping to defeat Nazi Germany and Japan during World War II.

It was created in 1861 from parts of the old Knox County Volunteers and was reorganized in 1865 as part of the Tennessee National Guard. The regiment fought in several engagements, including Stone's River Campaign and Battle of Chickamauga.
Morristown is a town in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Morristown is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. It is the cultural and industrial center of Marshall County and home to two universities, UT Knoxville and East Tennessee State University. The town was founded in 1835 by Baptist missionaries from Georgia. The first European to set foot on present-day Morristown was Andrew Jackson who called it "the most beautiful place on earth." In 1835, Baptist missionaries from Georgia came to this area and began preaching Christianity to Native American tribes living hereabouts. Reverend John Pemberton, one of these missionaries, purchased 1/4 mile (0.6 km) east of what is now downtown Morristown from the Chickamauga Cherokees for $105 ($ in 2019). In 1836 Pemberton organized a Methodist church in what is now downtown Morristown with about 20 members. A year later he donated land adjacent to his church for another Methodist church which was built in 1840-41 at a cost of $2,000 ($ in 2019). In 1840 Ezekiel Sprague moved his family into this area from rural Virginia and began growing corn and hay on land donated by Reverend Pemberton. Sprague became one of the original settlers hereabouts and helped found the Presbyterian Church while living here with his family until 1850 when they moved back to their ancestral home near Norfolk, Virginia. William Hines - an American merchant who had come overland through Mexico City - bought some land adjoining Sprague's farm in 1852 for $100 ($ in 2019). Hines named his new settlement "Hinesburgh" after himself but it reverted back to its original name four years later when he sold all his holdings north of Main Street (now US 41) including Hinesburgh Creek along with much of neighboring farmland to General Edwin Ewell Powers during Reconstruction days as part of a land deal that also included parts of Chattanooga (then known as Etowah County), Franklin County (later Davidson County), Hardin County (later Union County), Perry County (later Williamson County), Morgan Countys (later Robertson Parish), Pickens Parish (later Jefferson Parish) In 1865 John Wesley Powell located what is today downtown Morristown on a tract which he had purchased from General Powers during Reconstruction days for $25 per acre ($ in 2019). Asmorstown School District #1 erected its first building on property southwest corner Main Street & Spring Street just south of where Powell's school sits today on December 5th 1865 while Westmoreland School District #3 erected their second building southeast corner Spring Street & Main Street just west side off US 41 around 1925 according as far back as 1915-1916 During World War II many local businesses such as rubber manufacturers Fenton Rubber Company and Allendale Tobacco Products were established within or near Downtown Morristown due various military contracts or shortages thereof throughout that war years timeframe . After the war many businesses closed down due various reasons such as lackadaisical management or decision making by postwar officials overseeing post-war reconstruction efforts Asmorstown School District #1 ceased operations effective September 30th 1998 following 46 years steady operation providing education services primarily through grades pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade inclusive; however; prior thereto ASD#1 operated independently providing education services primarily through grades K thru 12th grade inclusive although special functions like assemblies have been held sporadically since early 1969 utilizing other facilities more recently constructed inside ASD campus ) Today ASD#1 operates outfitted with stateoftheart facility having multiple classrooms/reception areas plus gymnasium/laboratories ; library has been addition incorporating WPA funded building completed Fall 2005 which contains 709 sq ft electronic reading room using ereader devices; multipurpose hall provides meeting rooms/conference space for school board meetings; www internet access includes wi-fi capabilities for students inside school buildings including Extracurricular activities Offered By Teacher’s Association ) On July 1st 2020 Willowbrook Elementary School opened its doors after 10+ year wait formerly serving students within boundaries shown allegorically therein thwarting plans by previous Board members To amalgamate district with nearby larger Willowbrook Elementary School ).
