The United States Air Force has a rich history in Morristown, Tennessee. The first U.S. military installation in the area was Camp Atterbury on the border of present-day Morristown and Knoxville in 1917. After World War I, the air force began to grow rapidly and by 1945 had 14 bases in TN and 100 others worldwide. In 1952, Camp Atterbury was closed and replaced by Whiteman Air Force Base which continues to play an important role in USAF operations today. In 1956, the United States Air Forces (USAF) moved its main headquarters from at Wright-Patterson AFB to Whiteman AFB after it became clear that Camp Atterbury would no longer be able to handle the increasing number of USAF personnel stationed in Tennessee. Although Whiteman AFB remained home to both bomber and fighter aircraft untilactivatedin 1994, during its time as home of USAF Headquarters it also served as a base for training pilots for commands stretching all around the world; one such command was RAF Akrotiri on Cyprus where American fighter pilots faced off against British fighters during World War II. One of the most significant moments associated with Whiteman AFB’s role as USAF Headquarters occurred on July 16, 1957 when Lt Colonel Floyd Burt’s Northrop F-89 Scorpion fighter jet crashed into Tryon Tower just east of what is now Freedom Hall on campus. The crash killed all five crewmembers aboard while critically injuring Lt Col Burt who underwent surgery later that day but succumbed to his injuries days after the accident. This event helped establish USAF headquarters as a major center of aviation operations within the US military; it remains one of only two occasions where an entire unit has lost life while attached directly to a major national capital city airport (the other being Marine Barracks Wilsontown bombing). Although Wheeler Field continued serving as operational base for bombers throughout World War II, it became apparent that there were too few flying hours available per day for operational use there so Whiteman AFB was established as its primary ground facility; this gave rise to what is now known as Homeport squadron activity which involved groups of bombers operating out of different airfields across America in order to provide maximum firepower potential against any targets located anywhere within their airspace without fear of retaliation from enemy forces or local residents. This typeof operation eventually transitioned into strategic bombardment missions during peacetime when more capable sites became available however Homeport squadron activity still occurs under various names currently including Southern Wings Missile Wing, Bombardment Squadrons atWhitemanAirlinesBasesandAirportsand elsewhere across America today). The Morristown Air Force Base gift history began in 1941 when the United StatesAAF activated its first squadron at Morristown. The base was designated as an airfield Auxiliary Unit, No. 1, on 10/3/41 and was used for training of fighter pilots. On 12/1/42, the First Tactical Bomber Command (TBC) was activated at Morristown and the AAF garrison increased to about 100 officers and men. On 7/10/43 the First Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW) arrived from Eglin AFB Fla., becoming operational on 9/2/43. In 1945, the Second Tactical Fighter Wing (TWF) arrived from Langley AFB Va.. The Third Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW-3) transferred to Morristown on 2nd Aug., 1946 from Tinker AFB Okla.. The Fourth Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW-4), also from Tinker AFB Okla., transferred to Morristown on 3rd Aug., 1947. In 1951, Headquarters USAF moved from Wright Patterson AFB Ohio to Elmendorf AFB Alaska and a new wing was activated there called Ninth Air Force which included eight TFW squadrons: Twelfth Air Force; Thirteenth Air Force; Fourteenth Air Force; Fifteenth Air Force; Sixteenth Air Force; Seventeenth Army Group flying Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft with Provisional Ground Forces Squadron flying F6F Hellcat fighters being attached while acting as air defense control unit over Alaska territory only while planes equipped with camera and other electronic equipment were deployed in various locations along coast of Alaska as well as into Russian airspace by providing photographic reconnaissance mission known as Geostatistical Intelligence Gathering or Giannina Mission). This allowed for real time monitoring of Soviet nuclear sites across entire USSR by AWACS aircraft which allowed for interception of any nuclear weapons launches without having them hit targets within our country thereby preventing war starting WW II prematurely.
