Millington, Tennessee is a city of over 50,000 people that has been around for over 100 years. The city was founded in 1853 by James Millington and his father-in-law, David Vail. Millington was known as the Cradle of Coffee because it played an important role in the early history of coffee. Millington first became interested in coffee when they started trading goods with Spain. They brought back beans and cups to sell to their friends and family. In 1868, they began making their own coffeebeans. In 1870, they opened a store called The Royal Exchange which became one of the most successful businesses in town. In 1872, Josephine Goudreau came to Millington and started selling coffee at her business called The Empress Saloon on Main Street. This allowed Millington to reach a larger audience than ever before. Goudreau also helped popularize coffee while she was here and continues to be recognized as one of the most innovative women in American history for this accomplishment. In 1876, JB Blanchard opened his first restaurant in Millington called The Gourmand House which became one of the most famous restaurants in town. It served up quality food at an affordable price. This made it very popular among locals and tourists alike who would come visit Blanchard's restaurant during lunchtime or dinner time. In 1898, William Jennings Bryan ran for president on behalf of the Republican Party on account of his support for coffee growers throughout America. He won against Democrat McKinley by running on platforms that included supporting coffee interests across the board including exportations rights for Colombia and more money being given to farmers across America through crop insurance programs. This platform helped reduce competition among local grocery stores who were unable to keep up with Mr. Bryan's massive spending spree on infrastructure projects such as new highways and bridges throughout the city!

The name comes from the French for "mill" and "town". Millington was founded by James Milling in 1822 as a small logging community on the banks of the Cumberland River. By 1830, it had become an agricultural town with mills and flour mills providing both local and national markets with their products. In 1881, hard times led to a decrease in business; but during World War I when production increased due to military needs, milling returned to its previous level until 1941 when production passed 1 million barrels annually. In 1907, Millington's first high school was built on what is now Main Street. Millington High School currently offers classes 8-12th grade along with adult education programs such as culinary arts and business administration courses. The city continues to grow through annexations by other municipalities over time including: Carthage (1987), Goodlettsville (1991), Liberty Township (2002) and West Memphis (2006). All have helped increase its population by over 20%. currently there are 6 different municipalities that make up Hardin County including Millington proper as well as Carthage/Goodlettsville/Liberty Township which totals about 12% of all Hardin Countians live within that area alone!
