Millington took its name from local millers who constructed a sawmill on the present-day site back in 1859. At first, the milling inhabitants did most of their production themselves; however, over time, some merchants began to purchase needed tools and equipment from outside suppliers. By 1860, there were five mills operating in Millington - three by men and two by women - with an average daily production capacity of fifty barrels of flour per person! From its inception until present day, Millington's economy has been based heavily on agriculture (primarily corn) which has produced both local jobs and providing access to essential agricultural products for surrounding communities. Millington is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 621 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Millington was made by John Suggs on land he bought from the Cherokee tribe in 1797. A post office called Suggsville was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1868. In 1840, millers from Lebanon, Kentucky started a grain elevator on the Cumberland River near present-day Millington. The Elevator Company operated it until 1903 when it went out of business and was replaced by an oil refinery that operated until 1984. Millington had its first schoolhouse in 1837. A new one built in 1897 served as the only school building for Hardin County until 1956 when a new high school was built and dedicated to pioneers Sarah Wolkentin and Edwin Bledsoe II who donated $10,000 to help build it. In 1916 Millington became home to the National Defense Training Center during World War I which helped create many local jobs for war veterans. In 1925 Millington's first Baptist church began services with Reverend James Hogg leading the congregation from his home on Third Street eastward into downtowninity (). That same year saw also the founding of First Presbyterian Church with Rev Nels Ladd as pastor; this church still meets today inside First Presbyterian Church (old structure). From 1927 through 1951 there were two post offices: Suggsville and Millsboro; both closed down because they were too far away from their customers or too inefficiently run. In 1954 voting passed by referendum to incorporate as a city under District Attorney Harry Bowen’s leadership; this led to hard work throughout 1955-1956 by City Manager Floyd Alston putting together an ordinance book that gave legal sanction to community government while still maintaining traditional values like private property ownership and prohibition of gambling within city limits! After years of planning meetings and public hearings chaired by Mayor Don Shafer, erection ofcity hall began on October 10th 1957 with Mayor Shafer officiating at groundbreaking ceremonies! The clock tower currently stands atop Municipal Hall (now known as Hardin County Courthouse). On July 1st 1961 residents approved annexation into Henderson County effective August 1st 1961 after much back & forth discussion between citizens & county commissioners over concerns about water resources available within our small town & potential loss/gain of tax revenue -> Today Millington has jurisdiction over all unincorporated areas withinHardin County save for three specific properties viz., Village Green northeast of Main Street, Oldmill Rd./Millington Pike southwest of SR 1122 east of US 25 concurrent with Franklin Road (&Oldmill Rd.), & SpringHill Rd./SR 1451 northwest thereof all which are outside city limits

The town was founded by European Americans in 1820 as a small community named Mechanicsville on the banks of the Middle Fork River. The community grew rapidly and by 1828 it had erected a courthouse and jail. In 1832, Millington became the first incorporated town in Hardin County and prospered until 1861 when it was destroyed in an Indian raid. Millington was rebuilt on its present site and reached its peak population size between 1870 and 1880; however, this prosperity did not last because mills closed throughoutTennessee during the 1890s due to lack of demand for cotton goods exported from Tennessee to other states. In 1945, milling operations were discontinued in Millington because of competition from tractor-drawn plows mechanized by General Motors Corporation's Chevrolet division. The town declined slowly until it reached its low point around 2000 when there were only a few homes remaining and no businesses or schools open. However, with help from local businesses and donations from residents, Millington has since bounced back somewhat since then (2008 Census: 1,724).
