Millington was founded in 1786 by James Mill, a prosperous landowner and entrepreneur. The town grew rapidly during the mid-19th century, due to its location on the Cumberland River and its access to natural resources such as coal and cotton. In 1814, Millington became the first city in Tennessee. By 1860, it had over 20,000 residents. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, Millington was one of the most heavily fought cities in Tennessee. It was quickly evacuated, but small groups of people managed to stay behind and fight for their homes and businesses. In 1865, Millington rejoined the Union side and eventually received word that its citizens would be welcomed back with open arms if they surrendered unconditionally. However, manyResidents chose to fight continued resistance until after General Robert Ewell's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. As a result of the war and subsequent economic hardship for millworkers and their families, many mills closed down throughout Tennessee between 1871 and 1880. Today only a few remain standing in rural areas around Chattanooga or Knoxville – all of which are used for storage or manufacturing purposes rather than retail sales or residential use.
