The Memphis National Guard has been the primary arm of the United States Armed Forces in Tennessee since 1867. The guard is responsible for providing military support to the Department of Defense, state governments, and local communities throughout the area. The first unit organized by the Memphis National Guard was a Militia battalion known as "the 3rd Regiment" on November 25, 1861. The regiment was organized from men who had volunteered to serve in Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army during the American Civil War. When World War I began, many veteran Memphis Guardsmen served in Europe as part of Field Artillery battalions or Infantry brigades attached to various armies. After the war, some returned to Tennessee and were re-organized into Regiments under command of Major General John Coker (commanding officer at Camp Searcy). On October 1, 1921, Majors General Willis Jarrell and Harry S Truman both activated units from Reserve Division #2 headquartered atMemphis Army Airfield which became known as "the 4th Armored Cavalry Brigade." That brigade was redesignated on October 16, 1944 as "the 5th Armored Cavalry Brigade" when it was reactivated from those reserve divisions which had been converted into armored cavalry brigades status while stationed at Fort Knox Kentucky during World War II due to armor production shortages caused by Germany's Invasion of Poland in 1939. On February 12, 1950 Majors General Curtis LeMay activated elements of Reserve Division #1 headquartered atMemphis Army Airfield which became known as "the 8th Infantry Brigade". This brigade would become one element of III Corps Tactical Area Headquarters (THA) commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James Humes that same year when III Corps became an operational command within Strategic Services Agency (SSA) after its creation on May 15 following Japan's surrender during World War II. Following German capitulation following World War II new commands were established within SSA including Allied Powers Command zone headquarters located in Frankfurt am Main Germany renamed U S Forces European Command zone headquarters also called SHAEF on September 2 1946 with Major General George C Marshall appointed commander upon its establishment effective October 15 1946 with overall command over all US forces outside North America assigned to him including authority for operations inside North America through NATO and COMAC commands respectively although these commands operated concurrently within SHAEF until 1949 when they were transferred completely underMAJOR GENERAL HARRY S TRUMAN’s command effective January 20 1950 having control over ALL US forces outside North America except COMAC which operated under STRATEGIC SERVICES AGENCY until 1958 when it was transferred back under MAJOR GENERAL JOHN F KENNEDY’s command effective June 30 1957 concurrent with his appointment as Commander In Chief Far East Asia Pacific Theater

The Memphis, Tennessee military district was activated on November 15, 1917 as part of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in World War I. The district served as an infantry and artillery command center for Allied forces in Europe. The area surrounding Memphis was home to a large number of veteran units who were called up for service during World War I. On December 8, 1932, the Tennessee National Guard were mobilized to help maintain order during the 1929 Mississippi vote fraud scandal. The Guard was later used as a tool by governor John Pemberton to suppress voter turnout in races he won with majorities from both the Democratic and Republican parties. In 1935, General James E. White became Commanding General of the United States Army's European Theater of Operations and ordered the mobilization of all reserve units within the Memphis military district for use in Spain. This action marked one step in preparations for Spanish–American War II. In 1941-1942, Japanese soldiers infiltrated U.S.-held Pearl Harbor and bombed what would be Japan's first nuclear test site on April 6th,. As part of these rules, it was ordered that no woman or child without proper clothing should be seen within three miles (5 km) of any fort or post within Mobile County – a rule still being followed today by many people living inside urban areas across America due to legislation passed later that year forbidding such restrictions on women known then as “dragging their families behind them” outside residences situated more than three miles (5 km) from populated areas generally designated for whites only with exceptions exempted for members of militias when serving in defense against Indians).
