The Memphis Air National Guard's (MANG) 1st Brigade Combat Team (1BCT) flies in support of U.S. national interests around the world, deploying to locations such as Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya. The brigade has a rich history that is reflective of the city's proud military heritage. On February 10th, 1919, General John J. Pershing ordered American forces into World War I on an all-out effort against Germany and Austria-Hungary. The MANG was activated soon after in order to provide airmobile support for the war effort. With more than 4,000 men and women serving at one point, the ANG had a strong presence in our city until reunification in 1990. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender, many members of the Mang were discharged or retired from service0 leaving behind memories and artifacts that still remind us of their time spent within our Armed Forces. One such artifact is the "Memphis Belle" airplane donated by General George C Marshall to the Aviation Museum at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma Washington on September 6th, 1945 en route to Hiroshima following World War II . The plane was designed by Boeing Aircraft Company and first flew on October 15th 1944 . It served as an instrument training aircraft for Army pilots before being placed into storage at March Field near Riverside California during 1951-. It arrived at Joint Base Lewis-McChord on July 21st 1955 via barge and was later displayed at Goodyear Airport before being assigned to Headquarters 1BCT at Memphis Tennessee on August 3rd 1957 .
