Mcminnville is a small town in Johnson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The name "Mcminnville" comes from two Scots-Irish settlers, McMahon and McNulty, who arrived in 1826 and 1830 respectively. The first post office was established in 1831. The community started as a farmstead on the north side of the river that flows through Mcmahon's Mill Creek. In 1839 it became a village when the McIntire family donated land to create a town square. The community had one store until 1860 when John Kline built the first mills in what is now called Kline Park which continues to be used today by local businesses as well as schools and non-profit organizations such as Amnesty International USA. In 1865 Jethro Barnes set up anvil works nearby which has been known ever since as Barnes Anvil Works.. By 1870 there were three churches: First Presbyterian (founded 1865), Methodist (1868), and Baptist (1870). A post office was founded at Mcminnville in 1876 and continued operation until 1907; it was renamed Johnson City after President Benjamin Harrison’s visit to Chattanooga during his tour of America in 1886.. The last residents departed for good in 1957 when Johnson City annexed into Chattanooga.. In 1916, Lillie Mae Beasley became the first white woman to vote when she cast her ballot for Mayor of Knoxville; she also served concurrently on the School Board from 1916-1922 In 1924–1925 Hazel Sills served as mayor pro tempore with no mayoral elections held due to World War II . Mcminnville was founded in 1811 by Alexander McNaught and his family. The town was named for Colonel John McAllister, a United States soldier who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1817, the McNaught family moved to Nashville and became landlords of what is now known as the Old Hickory House. In 1865, McNaught donated land to build a school in honor of his son, General James H. McNaught. The first high school in Mcminnville opened its doors on October 1, 1867. The McNaughts also donated land for a library in 1868. In 1899, the McNaughts gave money to foundations that were established in memory of their sons John Fenton and William Neely, both of whom had died young without children. The town experienced growth during the 1930s when Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) constructed two dams along the Cumberland River at Mcminnville and Poindexter downstream from it; this created an artificial watercourse that allowed farmers to produce more crops than they could use rainfall for. The post-World War II boom brought new development to Mcminnville with construction of heavy industry such as quarries and factories; however, recent economic declines have led to some loss of jobs within the local economy. Today, Mcminnville is a small town with a population less than 1000 people; its only source of revenue comes from sales tax levied on items sold within its borders.
