Mcminnville is a small town in eastern Tennessee that was founded in 1864 by John Mcminn and his brother, James. The community has since grown to include a population of over 1,000 people and is located on the banks of the Cumberland River. It is known for its sturdy brick buildings, including the courthouse and jail, as well as its annual corn festival. The town was named after McNair County, Kentucky, which had been organized in 1837. John Mcminn arrived in Tennessee from McNair County in 1859 and became one of the first white men to settle in what is now Mcminnville. In 1862, he erected a stockade around his new community to protect it from raiders who were terrorizing nearby settlements. The fortification served as a model for similar defenses later built by other settlers in neighboring counties. John McNair died in 1863 and his estate was divided among his children. James McMinn took over management of the community and continued to buildrizd the fortifications until 1865 when he also died. His son John McMinn II took over management until 1875 when he sold the community to Jno Wickersham for $3/acre (approximately $72/km²). Wickersham renamed it Mcminnville after himself and developed it into an agricultural center with cotton plantations, fruit orchards, dairy farms, sheep stations, etc. In 1906-07, Wickersham donated land adjacent to Mcminnville for municipal purposes and created Village Park which still includes portions of original McNairy plantation land today. In 1948-49 General Motors Corporation established a manufacturing plant adjacent to Village Park which continues operation today as GMTennessee LLC.

Mcminnville was founded in 1819 by Major General James H. Mcminn and his family. The community was named for General John C. Mcminn, who had served in the Tennessee Volunteers during the American Civil War. The town grew rapidly after it was platted on a tract of land that had been donated by Colonel David Denny. By 1830, Mcminnville had a population of around 100 people and several businesses including a mill, bleach plant, sawmill and gristmill. The Panic of 1837 caused a significant decline in business activity in Mcminnville but the town continued to grow until the early 1850s when cotton prices collapsed and many residents lost their jobs. In 1859, following the establishment of the United States Custom House at Memphis,Mcminnville became an important stop on the southern mail route. Over time, most of the businesses closed or were moved to other locations within Memphis while some continued to operate until they were eventually destroyed by fire in 1922. Today, portions of Mcminnville remain active as small towns with few if any facilities remaining from its heyday as a commercial center for southeastern Tennessee. Much of what once constituted downtown has since been replaced by erected housing developments or other forms of development which have impacted markedly its character and original fabric; however, parts still retain much of their historic architecture including several churches dating back to before McKinnonville’s founding.
In 1801, the land around Mcminnville was purchased by General Andrew Jackson. The town was laid out in what is now the eastern part of the city and first started to be built in 1804. In 1840, a school was founded within the limits of present day Mcminnville. The town rapidly grew and by 1851 it had a population of 2,500 people. By 1861, the population had grown to 9,000 people and by 1870 it had reached 15,000 people. A post office was established in 1871 and remained in operation until it closed in 1912. In 1893-1894, a civic building were erected on what is now Main Street which served as the town hall until 1925 when an new hall was built on First Avenue which still serves as the town hall today.
