Mcminnville is a small town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Area. The first people to live in what would become Mcminnville were Native Americans who lived along the Holston River. The first white person to settle in what became Mcminnville was John Wesley Hardin, who built a cabin on the banks of the river in 1827. He and his family were followed by other settlers and traders until almost all of Knox County had been developed by 1836 when General Andrew Jackson moved his army into Knox County, creating what is now Chattanooga. The first post office forMcminnville was established in 1833, and remained open until it closed in 1865 due to lack of mail service. When postal service returned toMcminnville in 1923, it functioned as a general store until its closure in 1976. One of the earliest businesses founded in McminnVILLE was an agricultural Implement dealership run by Jno Hargrave from 1881-1883 which still stands today as a contributing factor to downtowns beauty and present day economy (Hargrave Implement Company). Other early businesses included: A Piggie Wagon shop operated by Fannie Perkins from 1895-1900; Mrs Dobson's dressmaking business with stores located at 12th & Stephenson Streets from 1902-1903; Mrs Williamson's grocery store with locations at 6th & Stephenson Streets from 1904-1910; Jno Goodyear's Tire Shop on 2nd Street from 1915-1920; Harry Laughlin’s Barber Shop on 3rd Street from 1919-1924; Mr Thomas' Store operate out of 7th Avenue between Iuka and McMinnville Roads 1912- 1913 Additionally Church started services here 1954 First Baptist church also opened here that year In 1903 there was also an electric light company established called Electric Light Supply Co., Incorporated which served bothMcginvilliansand surrounding areasuntil it merged into United Illuminating Company Holdings Incorporatedin2003
The first white settlers in Mcminnville, Tennessee arrived in the early 1800s. The area was part of the Cumberland Plateau and was thus available for Agriculture and Cattle Ranching. By 1864, there were around 10 families living in the community. The population had grown to around 100 by 1920. In 1934, Mcminnville became a city with its own government and a fire department. In 1955, the city annexed neighboring towns of East Nashville and West Nashville. In 1957, the city experienced another growth spurt with the arrival of new residents from Chattanooga and Knoxville. As more people moved into Mcminnville, it began to become an industrial town with heavy manufacturing operations such as textiles, food processing plants, aluminum production etc.. In 1984-1985,Mcminnville experienced a significant tornado outbreak that killed at least six individuals and injured many more.
