The Air Force has a long and storied history in Tennessee, dating back to World War I when the Signal Corps established a station at Mcminnville. In 1941, the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing was activated at Mcminnville, and since then, the Air Force has deployed units to various locations in the state. The first settlers in what is now Mcminnville were farmers who arrived from Kentucky in 1851. They began Farming on land that today includes part of downtown Mcminnville as well as parts of Soddy Fork Township and Blue Ridge Township. The first store in town was built on Fourth Street in 1853 by James Mclntire and his wife Sarah. At the time, this was the only store in town. By 1860, there were three stores in town with a population of approximately 100 people each. The most important development at this time was the arrival of the railroad which allowed for increased commerce and industry to grow quickly within the small community. This also led to an increase in population density which helped create more opportunities for social interaction among residents than ever before. Additionally, new churches were erected throughout town as people sought religious instruction amid tight financial resources at that time([1]). During these years there also appeared to be some tension between white supremacists and African Americans who lived within their communities[2],[3]. There appears to have been some open hostilities between these two groups until around 1863 when Union soldiers burned down one of these black churches[4]. It should be noted that while white supremacists may have engaged in violence against African Americans at times (euphemistically referred to as 'race riots'), such incidents cannot be considered typical or common behavior amongst early nineteenth century Tennesseans[5]. Indeed racism did not exist officially within Tennessee until Reconstruction era following American Civil War (1861-1865). With rapid industrialization came mass migration from rural areas into cities across America during this period[6]. For example, Pittsburgh’s Black Metropolis project aimed To provide work opportunities forAfrican Americans living within walking distance of downtown Philadelphia[] [] [] ]. Shortly thereafter similar projects took place throughout North America [] [] ]. One such example is New Orleans’ “Pelican Point” program which provided employment to unemployed Black men dating back to 1865[] [] ]. That said however tensions continue unabated today between urbanites and rural residents alike [] [/spoiler][/td] [/tr] Voters approved annexation by Knox County on November 3rd 1916 after voting almost unanimously yes on petitions submitted by both city officials and local citizens[7]. The vote followed a long process including public hearings where ample input was given about what would become known as "the municipally generated tax". After much debate over terms such as boundaries etc., annexation finally passed with just over 60% majority voted yes [8][9][10]. This marks Knox County's first official incorporation into any municipality outside Of Knoxvillians original county limits- something that continues today without any formal notification or consent from either party involved
