Maryville is a small town in Jefferson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The first coffee shop in Maryville was opened by two German immigrants, Johann and Wilhelm Hafer in 1875. They served a mixture of coffee and tea to their customers. In 1898, a Mr. Hansen opened the first grocery store in Maryville and started serving coffee as well as groceries. By 1912, there were six cafes dotted around town with many more opening over time including four restaurants before prohibition made coffee illegal in 1933. Although Prohibition ended throughout most of America, coffee continued to be popular in Maryville because it could be bought openly without regulation or taxation - an important advantage for small towns like Maryville during this time period when prohibition was an effective tool against gambling and othervice-filled activities that often disrupted social life in larger cities. After World War II ended and regulations began to come back into effect again (in 1948), many new Starbucks openings cropped up all over America but not until 1969 did Starbucks open its first café inside of a Walmart store on Cumberland Avenue near downtown Maryville - making it one of the first enclosed locations within Walmart stores across America In 1977, Don & Diane Darden opened their very own Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf restaurant which quickly became known as "the heart of Nashville". At this point Starbucks had only been open for about 5 years so they didn't quite have the same foothold that they do now but they still managed to bring some popularity to town by opening several more locations between 1978-1991 . The first known coffee house in Maryville was founded by three men who purchased a small patch of land around what is now the City Market on July 4, 1828. The original trio of entrepreneurs - James Fenton, John Cook and Isaac Hill - operated the business for just over two years before selling it to Joseph White. White Continued to serve Columbian Coffee at his store until 1840 when he closed it down due to financial difficulties. John Sibley opened the first grocery store in Maryville on Main Street in 1830 and began stocking coffee beans from Africa. He also sold bread and other items made from flour and oats imported from England. Over time, other businesses cropped up throughout downtownMaryville- such as a bakery (1832), laundry (1839), blacksmith shop (1840), tailor shop (1841) and shoe store(1849). In 1852, Methodists built their first church in town which led to an increase in demand for clergyman's transportation to preach throughout the area. This increased traffic caused problems for many small businesses that couldn't afford or needed new transportation methods; some were forced to close completely while others saw their hours reduced or eliminated due to lack of choice. In response, several merchants formed a partnership called "The Olde Transportation Company" which contracted with volunteers to provide carts full of goods drawn by horse or oxen across town during rush hour on Saturday morning so that businesses could still operate without fear of being robbed or damaged by oversizedpackages carried during weekday mornings/afternoons. This unique business model lasted until 1854 when Reverend Jethro Pritchard organized a similar effort but with cars instead of volunteers drawing goods across town during rush hour- this time lasting until 1870 when it was discontinued due to budget restrictions within Methodist Church finances.. Despite these challenges, throughout most of its history Maryville had significant success hosting various types of trade shows both locally and statewide including those held at Nashville Municipal Auditorium in 1851 & 1861 as well as at Knox County Fairgrounds in 1865 & 1868.. These events attracted hundreds of traders from all over central Tennessee who participated in local fairs along with representatives from all fifty states.. By 1850 Maryville had become an important center for agricultural production thanks largely to its position along I-65 linking Memphis with Clarksburg and Knoxville respectively as well as its location opposite Cumberland Gap National Park making it ideal for transporting goods between these cities and surrounding areas
Maryville, Tennessee is a town in Davidson County, Tennessee. The population was 9,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. The town was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1825 as a small community on the banks of the Cumberland River. In 1868, Maryville became an incorporated municipality and began to grow rapidly as a result of its location on the railroad corridor between Nashville and Memphis. In 1909, Maryville became one of several towns in Davidson County to be dedicated to education when it was included within the new district created by General George McClellan for rural Davidson County residents who could not afford or unable to attend local schools. That same year saw the opening of what would become known as Maryville High School, one of the largest high schools in Tennessee and one that continues to serve as an important educational resource for locals and tourists alike today. In 1926, Mayor John Aiken merged with neighboring communities Stonehaven and White Sulphur Springs into what would become known as "the most comprehensive municipal organization ever attempted in this country." At that time, Maryville had over 2,000 citizens including more than 200 businesses and six churches). By 1970, however, due to rapid growth within both the city limits and surrounding villages combined (particularly Stonehaven), Mayor Eugene Jorgensen ordered annexation of all but three villages – which were then given autonomy under their own incorporation laws – makingMaryville's total population now 6,614 people (including 3K students). Maryville, Tennessee is a small town located in Butler County, Tennessee. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County and has a ZIP code of 38607. The township of Maryville was organized on November 3, 1814 by David Frye and James Caldwell. The first post office in this town was established on December 12, 1814. The name of the original town site may have been derived from Mount Moriah which stands near this location. During the Revolutionary War, General George Washington camped here for two weeks in 1781 while his army fought against patriot forces under James Forrest at nearby Valley Forge. On October 24, 1865, Union general Ulysses S. Grant's army moved into Maryville after routing Confederate forces at Stones River; this event marked the end of the Civil War in Tennessee. In 1895 Maryville became an incorporated municipality with a population of 1,500 residents and it remains an incorporated municipality to this day with its own government and school system administered by a board of trustees. During World War II (1941-1945), Maryville played host to over 100 military installations ranging from airfields to shipyards and manufacturing plants including P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes operated by Eighth Air Force during aerial combat missions over Europe as part of Operation Market Garden; various medical supplies were also processed here during that time period for use in war-time Europe In 1951-1952 construction began on Interstate 65 bypassing downtown Maryville; construction ended just one year later when I-65 was completed concurrent with Highway 66 across Butler County from Maryville east to Lebanon . On May 6th, 1957 local citizens successfully opposed passage by state legislators of a bill making their city subject to annexation by Lebanon ; however annexation never took place because local officials decided they did not want their city annexed without first winning approval from their neighboring cities along I-65 . In 1978 plans were submitted for building a new shopping mall called "Xenon" which would have included offices, restaurants and hotels overlooking downtown; however these plans never came to fruition because Xenon's developers failed to secure enough financing . One project that did come true though was the erection of a large aluminum sign on Main Street advertising "Natchez", Mississippi as being within driving distanceof Maryville . This billboard remains today albeit covered in mossy wallpaper due to weather conditions . The highpoint for economic activity withinMaryvillenever reached such heights as during World War II when Bethlehem Steel produced more than $2 million worth of products here during that time period but since then many businesses have closed or relocated away from the community due to competition from larger metropolitan areas around Nashville or Memphis .. Today there are few if any active businesses remaining within Downtown MaryVILLE aside from some convenience stores dotting every block or so .. Many residents continue working outside although most factories now produce goods overseas rather than domestically .. Unemployment rates hover around 10%. As recently as recent years ago crime rates were much higher but now they are significantly lower thanks largely to efforts implemented by law enforcement officers who focus predominantly on DUI patrols and other projects aimed at preventing crime rather then arresting criminals themselves ..
