There has been a history of policemen in Maryville, Tennessee since the early 1800s. The first law enforcement officer in the area was a constable named James Robertson. He served from 1802 to 1811. A warrant system was not established until 1827, when an ordinance was passed that required sheriff’s deputies to issue warrants for arrests. The first departmental police barracks were built in 1903 and were used by the townspeople. In 1907, the state of Tennessee created its own departmental police force and Maryville became one of its departments. The department continued to grow throughout the years and by 1951 there were twenty-four officers assigned to it. In 1970, Maryville became part of the Knox County Police Department and annexation of other municipalities into Knox County led to additional growth within the department which eventually resulted in thirty-six officers assigned to it as of 2003. This growth is reflective of both the community’s desire for quality policing services and also how wellKnox County Police Department functions overall compared to other agencies within our county government. As With any large organization, there are always some problems that need addressed; however, I believe that Knox County Police Department is headed in a positive direction with many potential improvements that can be made if given enough time and support from management

This gift was in honor of the first black police officer in America, James A. Coleman who was hired by the city of Memphis, Tennessee on October 25, 1913. Mr. Beattie also gave away an American flag as a Policeman's Medal to each new hire during that year. On December 15th, 1915, Mrs. J.D. Beattie gifted another policeman's medal to Joseph Cockerill who had been promoted to sergeant that year. On January 26th, 1916, the city of Maryville bestowed its first badge upon one of its own when Harry Witherspoon was given his badge as a policeman for service with the cavalry detachment stationed at military camp near here during World War I (1914-18). By 1920 there were six policemen in attendance for the annual Christmas party which took place at Mrs John Morrison's home and provided entertainment for many local citizens including Mayor Boren and other dignitaries from townspeople throughout the area including Lt William Hargrave from Knoxville and Capt De Witt Griggs from Nashville just outside of town limits along I-65 until 10pm on December 24th when all officers assembled downtown under green arches then adjourned to Club house where refreshments were served until 11pm until bedtime for an event that included caroling by Miss Lavinia Werner and dances by The Glee Club followed by midnight mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church before returning home where they enjoyed dinner prepared by their wives before retiring early evening without further incidents or gifts being exchanged among them...This is the only known occasion when all Maryville Officers gathered together during any period while living within town limits and engaged in any type of social activity...It is possible that this club did more than sponsor social events; it may have been used as headquarters for coordinating law enforcement activities both inside and outside town limits."

There is no one specific history of Maryville, Tennessee. However, the town has been around since 1819 and was known as a center for agriculture and trade. In 1881, the town was renamed in honor of Martha Washington. The name change helped to attract new residents to the small town and it stayed that way for most of its history. The first inhabitants of Maryville were Native Americans who lived on the banks of the Cumberland River. The area that now contains Maryville was first settled by Scotch-Irish settlers in 1819. By 1830, these settlers had built a small log cabin on what is now called Grant Street. Over time, other families also moved into this area and began to grow crops and raise livestock. In 1881, when Martha Washington founded Mount Vernon estate in Virginia, she ordered her gardener to build a home for herself in Maryville so that she could attend meetings with her fellow Virginians while living closeby. This event helped to start the growth of Maryville as a major agricultural center within Virginia. During its early years,Maryville was known primarily as an agricultural community becauseof its importance in terms of production of meat and hay products. However, over time,the town began to become known for its unique architecture – specificallyits churches and schools – which remain some of Virginia’s most popular tourist destinations today. Additionally, Maryville played an important role during the Civil War because it served as a stop on Union forces’ route between Richmond and Petersburgrespectively. In 1925, the Tennessee General Assembly passed a bill allowing municipalities to annex rural areas within their borders. As a result, Maryville annexed the villages of Mount Vernon and Newbern. The annexation created a new borough which had a population of 4000 residents in 1959. On December 12, 1972, the Borough of Mount Vernon merged with Maryville to form one consolidated municipality with a total population of 7600 people.
