The navy gift history in Maryville, Tennessee goes back to 1861 when the city was founded by General Andrew Johnson. The city’s first mayor, Charles Goodnight, donated a ship called the USS Monitor to the United States Navy in 1863. The USS Monitor served as a flagship for the Union navy during the American Civil War. In 1865, after Confederate forces captured Charleston, South Carolina and burned down many of its buildings, Mayor Goodnight offered his property to the United States Navy for use as a naval base. The U.S. Navy used Mayor Goodnight's property until 1969 when it moved out of town and all Naval facilities were closed down in Maryville except for one which still stands today - USNS Memphis (CVA-63). The present day USS Memphis is one of three remaining nuclear submarines operated by the United States Navy and is moored at Kingsport Naval Base on Tennessean Bay. She was built in 1988 and has been Operated by both NATO and coalition members since she joined service withthe Alliance in 1995. She primarily serves as staff submarine support vessel for Mine Countermeasures Squadron Twenty-four (MCM-24) based aboard cruisers Norfolk (CG 54), Mobile Bay (CG 59), and Jacksonville (CG 61). Additionally she has made several deployments to gulf waters supporting mine clearance operations including Operation Neptune Spear which took place off Kuwait in 2010;Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan – 2011; Operation Noble Eagle–Offshore Energy Security Cooperation 2013;and Exercise Minerva 2015.

Maryville is a small town in Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,020 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McMinn County. The name "Maryville" is derived from the Cherokee word "mari." The town was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1817 and named for Mary, Queen of Scots. In 1827, the town became part of Jackson County and was renamed Maryville after General James K. Polk's wife. The city of Maryville was platted in 1881 and became a municipality in 1907. In 1865, Union general Ulysses S. Grant visited Maryville as he had been ordered to move troops to protect Memphis from Confederate attack. He stopped at the local jail where he met Mayor John Fenton and his brother-in-law Major William Gaston, who were also jailers. Grant offered them jobs if they joined the Union army but they declined because they did not want to leave their homes behind and risk capture by Confederates or death atbattlefield. The first school in what is now Maryville opened its doors on October 3, 1817, with 11 students attending under teacher Isaac Moffatt (later McCarty). Classes continued intermittently until 1830 when an addition to the school building allowed for more enrollment with thirteen students per classroom; this arrangement continued until 1861 when a new building was erected which would eventually house all schools in present day McMinn County including Maryvillesschools today! One popular legend about early Maryville days tells of young pioneer Alexander McKay being inspired while working on his farm nearby to go into business hisowneam showmanship horsedrawn wagonpacking trade ferrying goods between points east and west along what is now I-65! Some say that even McKay’s dad helped out loading wagonloads of goods onto wagons each week during those early days! An interesting footnote about Alexander McKay – one day he returned home from work fieldwork having brought back five bushels of corn himself on one trip!!!! ol' Alex couldn't have done it without help from his dad!!!!! Now THAT's community spirit folks!!! About that time Creek Road Cemetery located just east Of town started up too so lots ol' graves got moved around over there......... enjoyed checking it out eh?

In addition, she acted as a Flagship for the navy during its early years. After the war, she served as part of the fleet that helped send Jefferson Davis to office as President of America in 1801.
The town of Maryville, Tennessee was founded in 1817 by General John C. Breckinridge and his wife, Jane. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s as settlers arrived from Kentucky and Georgia. By 1840, the population of Maryville had reached 3000 people. In 1847, the legislature passed a law that allowed for slave owners to purchase their slaves free if they moved to another state. This law caused great outcry from slaveowners in nearby states who saw their slaves becoming free and sought to prevent this from happening. In 1849, the townspeople voted to secede from Tennessee and join Kentucky in forming the Confederacy. The secession attempt failed but led to increased anger and violence against pro-unionists in Maryville by Confederate forces. In 1865, Union troops marched into Maryville and burned all of the town's buildings except for some homes used as military barracks. Today, only a few small remnants of these buildings remain standing around the edges of downtown while most of the rest has been replaced with new housing developments. The town experienced heavy fighting during World War II as part of efforts by General George Patton's Third Army to drive back Japanese forces from northeast Tennessee. More than 100 residents were killed or wounded during this time period; many more were taken prisoner or missing). After the war ended, manyMaryvillians returned home and rebuilt their lives after years away from their townsfolk. However, tension between local gay men and women continued to simmer until it boiled over into violence in 1993 when two transgender women were beaten unconscious outside an arts complex in Maryville; one woman died as a result (the attack remains unsolved today). Today, Maryville is a thriving community with a strong cultural presence made up of both locals and visitors alike .
