Maryville, Tennessee is a small town in the Davis County, Tennessee Valley region of the United States. The population was 713 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The community was named for General James H. Mary, who served as a brigadier general in the Union Army during the American Civil War and later became an entrepreneur in local cotton plantations. The first post office was established in 1868, and by 1875, Maryville had a population of 175 people. In 1892, the first school opened in Maryville; it became a high school in 1909 and now teaches secondary education. During World War II, Maryville was home to 1st Air Force Base (later known as Wright-Patterson AFB), which housed British Spitfires and other aircraft from RAF Coningsby. The base closed on December 14, 1945 and all its personnel were evacuated to nearby Memphis before being re-deployed to Japan two days later. Since then, Maryville has seen several waves of immigrants: Albanians (1947–51), Poles (1952–55), Vietnamese (1965–70), Mexican Americans (1970s), Koreans (1980s) and most recently African Americans (2010).
