The history of the National Guard in Maryville, Tennessee begins with the founding of the town in 1882. At that time, it was an agricultural community located on the Cumberland River. The first organized national guard unit was constituted in 1887 and consisted of a few soldiers from Maryville. The unit served as a militia detachment until 1912 when it was redesignated as the National Guard Company A. From 1912-1975, National Guard Company A operated out of barracks located at Confederate Memorial Park. In 1975, company headquarters were relocated to downtown Maryville to better serve the community. Throughout its history, company A has been a vital part of local government and have played an important role in repelling invasion attempts by both foreign and domestic enemies alike. Today, company A remains one of the most active military units in town with over 150 members sworn into service every year.

The community began as a community of Methodist Episcopalians on land donated by General William Shriver in 1909. The first school was built in 1915 and the first store opened in 1916. A water tower was erected in 1924 and the first electric line linking Maryville with other communities was brought into service in 1927. In 1951, a Baptist church and rectory were built adjacent to the high school. The first football game played at Maryville High School occurred on November 10, 1951 against Sewanee College (now Vanderbilt University).
In 1966, cotton fields were burned down and replaced with housing developments that continue to be used to this day. In 1978, four churches - twoMethodist and two Baptist - merged to form one congregation known as First Presbyterian Church of Maryville which still meets at the old buildings on Cumberland Road. In 1984-1986 an asphalt plant operated by Donelson Corporation located north of town produced some local jobs that helped support growth within the community during these difficult times but it shut down years later due to economic conditions within Tennessee overall.
During much of its time as a small town near Chattanooga, Maryville had no public transportation options beyond walking or biking; however, starting in 2018 through their partnership with Mastercard Express Cards they are now providing bus services from downtown Chattanooga

In 1954 Congress created reserve forces status for members of the National Guard who are drafted into active duty during wartime but maintain their right to serve without interruption for up to four years after discharge from active duty; this statuses have been extended several times since then (most recently through reclassification of Reserve Officers Training Corps [ROTC] students]). At present there are more than 200 million Americans registered with one or more unit of the National Guard (at least 54 percent serving outrégardlessof whether they are called upon to deploy). The origins of today's national guard can be traced back to America's revolutionary war era militias which were created specifically for defense against Great Britain's military presence within our borders After America's victory over Great Britain at Battle of Saratoga on September 3rd1777 we needed an effective way to protect our new nation so on October 7th 1781 George Washington called together a meeting chaired by Lt Colonel John Adams where it was decided that individuals who had volunteered or been drafted into Patriot forces would form regiments or brigades with specific duties such as guarding strategic points along Morrisburg Road leading south towards Richmond Virginia while also engaging in night ops if necessary these units would be known as Battalion squares
