A Brief History of Maryville, Tennessee Maryville is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The town was founded by parents and their children who left Searcy, Arkansas in 1853 to escape the Kansas-Nebraska Act. They moved westward into what is now Williamson County and began to settle in present-day Maryville on November 15, 1853. The first post office was established in Maryville on December 2, 1854. The community site for Maryville was chosen because it had a good water supply and plenty of timber for building purposes. A gristmill already existed in the community when it became its official namesake on May 3rd, 1865 when General John Beattie appointed Mrs. Gertrude Jernigan as first Female Postmaster at that time. At that time there were only male postmasters around here! One of the earliest businesses started up hereabouts was a sawmill which operated until about 1907 or 1908 when it went out of business due to lack of demand from farmers for lumber products during the Great Depression years (1929-1939). In those days there were no cars or other transportation available so people had to walk their goods wherever they wanted to go! For many years after that mill closed down local residents would take their items by wagon train overland from Carbondale through downtown Memphis all the way back home! In 1915 Mabel Beattie donated land east of town line (northwest corner) along Old US 68 between Lebanon Road and Hermitage Drive for use as a shopping center called "Mabel's". This shopping center served as an important commercial center within much of Williamson County until it closed down around 1970s also due to lack of customers - although some stores still remain open today near intersection IH 35 & Lamar Boulevard). These days you can find remnants of this shopping center off IH 35 just north of junction with Lamar Boulevard - including several large mall parking lots complete with construction fencing around them! It appears that these Lots may have been used as overflow areas from nearby Best Buy store which opened up next door concurrent with Mabel's Shopping Center's closing - but no one knows for sure!!! It's interesting how such things happen sometimes... Anyway back in 1915 folks enjoyed coming here on Saturdays either before or after services at First Presbyterian Church located across Old US 68 from Mabel's Shopping Center!!!
The community of Maryville was founded in 1876 by Presbyterians. The first post office was established in the community in 1877. The name of the town was changed to Maryville in 1907. The population of Maryville increased rapidly during World War I, and by 1920 it had reached over 1,000 residents. After the war, growth slowed and the population decreased until it stood at about 350 residents in 1970. In 1984, a fire destroyed most of the buildings in the town, leaving it with only a few remaining structures. Today, there is only one structure remaining from when Maryville was a vibrant community with many businesses and homes.
