The First Coast Guard Station was located in what is now downtown Maryville and was manned by two men, one of whom was the first Chief Petty Officer. The station was closed in 1914 and does not appear to have been reopened since. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has given numerous gifts to residents of Maryville. In 1881, Maryville became the capital of what would become West Tennessee. The town flourished during this time as it became an important manufacturing center for items such as textiles, shoes, and wagon wheels. However, by World War I, Maryville had lost its economic vitality and nearly went out of business. Then, in 1925, Mayor Fenton decided to make Maryville an official city. This led to increased development in the town and helped it maintain its position as a major cultural center within West Tennessee. Today, Maryville is a thriving community with a rich history that can be enjoyed by all who visit it.
In 1821, Maryville was founded by James Robertson. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Cumberland River and its natural resources. By 1830, Maryville had a population of over 100 people. In 1836, the city was incorporated and became a part of the Tennessee Valley Authority. In 1945, Maryville welcomed an influx of displaced persons from World War II when the United States bombed Hiroshima. The city renovated and expanded many of its facilities after the war. In 1949, violence erupted in nearby Johnson City over racial tension between whites and African Americans. This led to increased police patrols in Maryville and other cities in the region. After years of progressivism, social unrest characterized much ofMaryvillenation during the late 1960s and early 1970s; this contributed to some decline in growth during that period
