Martin, Tennessee is a small town located in Jackson County, Tennessee. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. The first settler in Martin was Captain John Sevier who built a cabin on the east bank of the Middle Fork Holston River in 1786. He and his wife, Susannah Jefferson, had six children and were the parents of General James Sevier, Jr., who served as governor of Tennessee from 1801 to 1805 and as United States Minister to Spain from 1808 to 1809. In 1830, Eli Broadhead founded Broadhead Mill on the west side of village square. The mill became a national landmark in 1865 when it was designated as a National Historic Landmark. In 1870, Martin erects its first schoolhouse which remains standing today. From 1830 until about 1840 there were no storehouses or other buildings within walking distance of the village square; this changed when John Waddell erected a two-storey log house on what is now Main Street in 1840 and began to sell goods he had produced himself or had acquired through trade with nearby settlements such as Decatur (now Decatur City), Tellico Plains (now Tellico) and Carthage (now Carthage).
