The following year, it erected a Carnegie library which remains operational today. In 1933, Martin voted to become an independent city under the leadership of Mayor Hosea Meeks. This decision marked one of the most significant moments in its history because it set up a process that allowed other municipalities within Knoxville to gain independence as well. Today, Martin is known for its vibrant nightlife and its unique architecture - including buildings built with money given by industrialists such as Carnegie and John Drexel - which has drawn international attention since becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.
The first European to land in what is now Martin County, Tennessee was the Spanish explorer Andrés de Veracruz on October 16, 1539.
