Martin was founded in 1819 by James Martin and his wife Jane, who named it for the General of the Tennessee Volunteers, Andrew Johnson. The town grew rapidly from its founding until the American Civil War. It was heavily damaged by Union artillery fire and was renamed Knoxville in 1865 after Confederate general Robert E. Lee.
