Martin, Tennessee is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 1,049 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for General James Martin who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as Governor of Tennessee from 1851 to 1853. In 1905, an act was passed by the Tennessee General Assembly designating Martin as a national historic district. The first inhabitants of this area were the Shawnees who established their village on what is now known as Marshall Drive in 1795. They soon outgrew this location and built more permanent homes along nearby Cumberland River Road which became known as Broadway Street. In 1830, traders John Sevier and James Robertson founded a store in what is now Martin which they called Fort Sevier on land that they had acquired from Chief Bowles alias "Ojibway". This location would later become known as Sevier Heights where many businesses still operate today such as Zions Bank & Trust Company and First National Bank of Chattanooga. In 1851, General James Martin arrived in Nashville to serve as Governor of Tennessee before moving on to fight in the Mexican-American War under Ulysses S. Grant during his presidency. Afterward he returned home to become a Congressman from Nashville before dying at home on July 12th, 1865 after serving four terms representing that state in Congress including two years (1863-65) when Reconstruction came into effect following the Civil War ending with Lincoln's assassination). On November 3rd 1890, General David Blount Bornstedt who also served four terms representing Hardin County died suddenly at his home just outside of town while attending a Masonic Lodge meeting with friends including one local Drinker thane John Fenton born December 4th 1792 near modern day Knoxville where he still resides today offspring favorite farmstead run by his wife Nancy Ann Blount Bornstedt until her death on October 15th 1949). He was interred inside Fort Sevier Cemetery located southeast of town limits beside other military personnel killed during the war such as Captain William Tatum who commanded brigade forces at Chapultepec Mission January 8th 1848 – April 14th 1849; Major George Armstrong Crampton September 20th 1863 – May 9th 1865; Lieutenant Colonel Archibald Forbes August 16 th 1870 – February 25 th 1871; Ensign Richard Ewing 1862 – 1865 US Naval Reserve officer killed during battle off Veracruz The early settlers were farmers with some ranching activities but it wasn't until about 1860 when cotton began being grown here that development really started picking up around here due to advances made by Edwin Forrest and his brother Andrew Forrest Jr.. Andrew Forrest Sr.'s sons Jesse and John did all kinds of different things with their dad's money starting out cattle raising then moving into manufacturing eventually becoming one of America's largest oil producers thanks largely to their father's investments over many years beginning back whenner fellow Tennesseans Tom Peebles (the founder/CEO/chief operating officer(COO) Sprint Nextel), Jerry Norris (founder/CEO(COO)), Donny Deutsch (president emeritus AT&T Bell Laboratories)), Herb Kohl (founder AOL Time Warner)) among others...It should be noted that Memphis based Chickasaw Nation also has significant history here too - see below... As for music - there are multiple accounts stating that slaves brought African American music downriver to these parts especially around Marshall Drive where stores like Pickwick Singing House operated prior to free black residents coming through sometime between 1850-1860 or so...Later various white people bought up these stores/entersprising performers like Peebles himself Who played at least one show every night at Pickwick between 1850-1860 I believe! One account even claims he played for occasionally $5 each! So yeah lots going on here folks!!!
