The National Guard in Manchester, Tennessee was first organized on July 1, 1903. At that time, the state of Tennessee had not yet ratified the United States Constitution. Therefore, the Governor of Tennessee appointed a militia to protect the state’s borders from potential Kentucky and Missouri invasions. The first soldiers in this army were recruited from local farmers andavers. On November 8, 1903, General John W. Pershing was given command of the new National Guard Bureau in Nashville. This organization helped to put into effect General Pershing’s vision for national defense which included using all available resources to maintain law and order throughout America. As Americans responded to World War I by coming out in record numbers to serve their country, there was also an increase in demand for Guardsmen. In 1927-28 alone, the National Guard troops deployed 10 times throughout Tennessee as part ofOperation Crossroads which aimed to stop communism within our borders before it could spread internationally. In 1939-40 when World War II began with Germany’s invasion of Poland, Manchester became one of over 50 cities across America mobilized for war effort with Guardsmen assigned as military policemen and guards at every public building including transportation hubs like airports and water supplies (Leeson v City Council). When war ended on September 2nd 1945 only 3 Manchester men were among those honored with Presidential Unit Citation for bravery during World War II – Warrant Officer First Class Harry Prentice (n/a), Sergeant First Class Earle Crouse (n/a) & Corporal Earl Fenton (n/a).

Manchester was a town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. It had a population of 1,598 at the 2000 census. The town was founded by James Fenton and other settlers in 1807. Manchester later became the county seat of Williamson County. The first school in Manchester was built on the current site of the city hall in 1851. The village also had a post office, store, and blacksmith shop until it closed its doors in 1915. The only remaining building from this time is the old courthouse which has been used as a community center since 1978. In 1865, General Order No. 12 called for all male citizens between the ages of sixteen and sixty-four to provide one hundred men for military service in Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Many residents chose not to serve because they did not have enough money or weapons to do so. Manchester voted against secession and remained Unionist throughout the war. Afterward, many residents left Manchester for various reasons including poverty or lack of opportunity back home in Williamson County; however, some returned after Reconstruction ended in 1865 with new efforts to rebuild Manchester into an upstanding community once again led by Mayor John Henson (). In 1872, Manchester's first library opened with books from Harper's Ferry donated by local resident James Fenton (). Manchester experienced rapid growth following World War I with many businesses opening up and people moving into the area due to its good schools and growing economy (although violence continued to be an issue). In 1923, Mayor Henson spearheaded plans to put Manchester on UPN channel 54 as part of their attempt to gentrify downtown areas across America (). This also saw development around Will Rogers Park (), which continues today as one of largest open-air shopping malls east of Memphis () while other areas such as Broad Street remain Infill development districts that retain high concentration levels of commercial activity without much public access or redevelopment opportunities ().
