Polk built Fort Donelson in Manchester to protect the town from Confederate attack. The fort served as a base for various military campaigns throughout Tennessee and southern Kentucky. In 1865, after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Manchester fell to Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant. During the Civil War, Manchester saw heavy fighting including two battles near the town: Battle of Fallen Timbers (1865) and Battle of Corinth (1867). In 1865, about 20 percent of all casualties in American armies were due to battle with Rebel forces in Tennessee alone; this number increased to 50 percent following Reconstruction years later. post-war development has included growth of downtown business districts around state capitol complex as well as new housing developments along major highways outside city limits Since World War II, Manchester has been an important center for cultural activity with several large-scale festivals taking place each year such as Memphis Renaissance Faire or North Mississippi Folk Festival
