Manchester is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area and is located about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Knoxville. The city began as a farming community on the southern edge of what is now Chattanooga. In 1869, an act of the General Assembly designated Manchester as a site for a new state capital and it became one of the original sixteen settlements in Tennessee when that state was organized on November 3, 1861. Manchester grew rapidly during Reconstruction following the Civil War and played an important role in developing Tennessean culture and economy. Manchester is named after General Andrew Jackson who died in 1837 and was buried in nearby Hickory Hill Cemetery. The first residents of Manchester were pioneers who arrived on the Cumberland Plateau in 1805. They built log cabins and hunted deer and hogs for food. By 1830, many people had moved to Manchester from other parts of the country because of its fertile soil, good water supplies, and mild climate. Railroads came toManchester in 1855 and soon it became a major city with numerous businesses and stores. The community continued to grow until the late 1800s when cotton farming began to decline due to changing patterns of production. In 1925, Manchester College opened its doors as one of the first institutions of higher education in Tennessee. It served as a learning center for students from all over the state until it closed its doors in 1969. Today there are few remnants of Manchester’s past including several blocks off University Avenue which are now home to local businesses There are also several museums located within walking distance of downtown that offer interesting histories about local history like the First Baptist Church which was built in 1865 In addition, there is an annual arts festival that occurs during autumn which features exhibitions by local artists Today, Manchester remains a vibrant community with active businesses and cultural events happening every week-end!
