The Lewisburg Air Force Base was founded in 1942 as a result of the United States entry into World War II. The airbase was originally located on the outskirts of town and it only became operational during the early 1940s when it was built on land that had been donated by the city of Lewisburg. The airbase initially served as a training ground for aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Lockheed, but later became home to both the 9th Bomb Wing (later known as the 5th Bomb Wing) and the 4th Fighter Wing. In 1948, General James Van Fleet transferred control of Lewisburg Air Force Base from Troop C, Third Army to Headquarters Ninth Air Force. This move gave headquarters jurisdiction over all USAAF bases in Europe, which led to an increase in activity at Lewisburg AFB. In 1951, headquarters relocated to RAF Lakenheath in England after being forced to evacuate from Paris due to unspecified threats against Allied forces. The 4th Fighter Wing assumed operations at Lewisburg AFB in 1955 following its activation from inactive duty with the 622nd Fighter Group stationed at Selfridge AF [now Joint Base Andrews]. That same year saw Headquarters Ninth Air Force reassignments when Eighth Air Forces were activated under Operation "Crossroads" and assigned additional bombers, fighters and reconnaissance assets worldwide. As part of this reorganization, Headquarters NinthAirForce moved its command post from RAF Lakenheath back inside Lewisburg AFB late in 1957[1]. In 1959, Headquarters NinthAir Force activated reactivated 711st Troop Carrier Squadron [later redesignated 501st Tactical Airlift Squadron] at Lewisburg AFB following their re-activation from reserve status with wings participation inOperation Thunderball II[2]. On 1 October 1959 HQ USAF activated 509th Tactical Airlift Squadron [later redesignated 499th Tactical Airlift Squadron], providing heavy lift support for military installations throughout Southeast Asia through either transport or cargo flights utilizing Douglas DC-8Cs/DC-10s operated by Republic Aviation.[3] With troop carrier capabilities added this squadron soon became one of NATO's most prolific transports providinglift support for troops deployments across several theaters during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom[4]. Due much emphasis being placed upon strategic airspace management during these years many older Douglas DC-5Bs were replaced by newer McDonnell Douglas MD-80s/MD-90s becoming one of USAF's primary fleet carriers ferrying troops everywherefrom overseas battlefield deployment points allthe way up North America! By 2007 however turboprop capability within USAF began taking over with MDW 747Fs become predominant operating provider supporting theater wide contingency operations! Today total flying time including refuelling has exceed 10 million hours making our KC–135Js some of longest serving aeriallifters ever!
