In 1806, French explorer Pierre Fearon discovered what is now Beirut and named it after his homeland—Lebanon—in order to distinguish it from other Ottoman provinces under French rule. Over time, Lebanese people started to import different types of beans from Africa and South America as well as roasted Arabica beans from Europe. By the early 20th century, espresso had become popular among European elites and was being exported back home at a high price tag. But despite its popularity among non-native drinkers, espresso remained a rare commodity outside of Italy and Spain. This was until 1923, when Swiss traveler Gabrielle de Champlain introduced espresso to the Lebanese population through her travels through Anatolia during her explorations of modern Turkey. From then on, espresso became popular not only among locals but also within mainstream European circles as well. Today, artisanal coffee houses abound across Lebanon thanks to increasing interest in this versatile beverage outside of North America and Europe. Lebanon, Tennessee is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee. The population was 751 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Williamson County. The first settlement in what is now Lebanon was made by James Robertson and his wife in 1819. They named their new community "New Edinburgh."
