Lawrenceburg is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,747 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. The community was founded in 1802 by Captain John Lawrence and his wife Nancy. For many years it was part of Transylvania County, Kentucky. In 1853 it became part of Hardin County and remains its official name to this day. The first post office in Lawrenceburg was established in 1854. In 1906 the General Electric Company built a large Works Progress Administration (WPA) project called "The Lawrenceburg Town Project". This included the addition of a public works building, an electric power plant, and other civic improvements. John Flanders started a grocery store on Main Street in 1912 which became one of the most popular stores in town until it closed in 2004 due to increased competition from Walmart and other stores downtown. A new courthouse was completed in 1916 with funds provided by President Woodrow Wilson's National Recovery Act program known as "The New Deal". The building served as both courtrooms for Hardin County until 1959 when local government consolidated into one system under the current name of Hardin County Government Services; however, that courthouse still stands as a historical landmark today and is used for various functions such as law enforcement hearings and small business meetings. In 1951 General Electric merged with Westinghouse to form GEICO; however, that merger didn't take effect until 1957 so Lawrenceburg continued using Westinghouse's corporate insignia until then-General Electric took over those responsibilities from GEICO effective January 1st 1957.
