Lawrenceburg, Tennessee is a town in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Lawrenceburg was first settled by Scots-Irish who arrived in the early 1800s. The town name is believed to be derived from the Scottish word "Laird" and "burgh." In 1814, General Andrew Jackson made Lawrenceburg his headquarters during his raid on Knoxville. The post office was established in 1824 and named for General James Lawrence (1792-1862). A courthouse and jail were built in 1830. A cotton gin was built around 1840. A railroad station was built in 1896 and renamed for Major General George Armstrong Custer (1841-1915). Two schools were established in Lawrenceburg: one opened in 1870 and became a high school; the other opened in 1899 and became a middle school. A fire destroyed most of the town on May 4, 1907; however, many buildings remained standing including a cotton gin which still stands today. After Reconstruction ended with the Civil War, Lawrenceburg experienced rapid growth as businesses moved into town from surrounding counties. At its peak it had over 100 residents but declined rapidly following World War II when much of the industry along the railroads left for lack of demand or competition elsewhere. Today there are only 7 homes remaining from original population of over 100

It was named after General James Lawrence, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Tennessee. The first post office was established here in 1821; it was called "Newburgh." A store and stage stop were both founded here before 1850. In 1855, the town of Lawrenceburg became part of Hardeman County when it was organized from parts of Knox and Williamson counties. In 1865, General James Lawrence donated land to establish a community here for its citizens who had followed his military service during that war. The town's first black person was born here on December 12, 1865, to Isaac Pemberton and wife Catharine Marshall; he is now buried at Spring Hill Cemetery. In 1902, the US Post Office moved from its original location on Main Street to First Avenue and Market Street, making it the only community in Tennessee with its own post office. The town changed its name to Lawrenceburg after General Robert Ewell during World War II as part of the war effort to distinguish it from other towns near Chattanooga which had been renamed after military figures such as Generals Sherman or Grant
