The first coffee shop in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee was opened in the early 1800s by a man named David Baxter. The store became known as The Peanut Gallery and later The Coffee House. In 1876, the town of Lawrenceburg was incorporation and the first post office was opened at that location. By 1890, the city had a population of around 100 people and there were several businesses in town including a bakery, an extractor works, a mercantile business, a livery stable and a Teapot Theatre. In 1907, Postmaster John Hargrave decided to build his own coffee shop on Main Street which would become known as The Gresham House. By 1912, the Gresham House had become one of the most popular locally-owned coffee shops in town with customers coming from all over the region for their morning coffee fix. In 1940, The Gresham House passed away but its legacy continues to be felt today with numerous organizations such as the Lawrenceburg Historical Society maintaining portions of its property including its building which is now home to various local businesses such as Baked Goods & More and Secondhand Shopping Center.
Lawrenceburg is a town in Henry County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis–Auburn–Birmingham, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what would become Lawrenceburg were Frenchmen who arrived around 1795. They named their community "Laurencebourg" after a small village in Normandy where they had been living until then. There was also an early settler from England named John Lawrence who arrived around 1800. In 1810, General Andrew Jackson and his troops burned down the courthouse and all but three buildings in the town center to punish residents for supporting Federalist Party candidate James K. Polk during the presidential election that year. After the Civil War ended, Lawrenceburg returned to its original name of Laurencebourg with new settlers coming in search of land after reconstruction began in 1865. The population grew rapidly during Reconstruction due to new jobs and opportunities available following the war effort. In 1870, a school was built on Meeting Street and operated by private individuals until it became public schools District No 16 under state law enacted that year. This period of time saw significant growth for Laurenceburgh as businesses mushroomed and people returned to live here permanent or at least until moving out again for various reasons such as health problems or other commitments outside of town limits (such as county lines). In 1907-1908, construction started on what would become known as "The Steel Mill", one of the most important projects undertaken by both municipal government and local steel mills during Reconstruction Periods across America due to increased demand for wartime production products such as aluminum cans and railroad ties; much like today's industries that rely on skilled laborforces to produce high-quality goods domestically while exporting these same products world wide through NAFTA/CETA etc...due to globalization we are seeing similar trends developing here with job postings now being posted online primarily which I feel bodes well for our economy overall over time...unfortunately however there has been recent news surfacing about environmental damage done to this mill specifically located next door (and adjacent farmland) due to drunken drivers using it as a parking lot etc...now we need everyone's help if we want see this project completed properly! The first settlers in the town were farmers and their families. They built their homes on farms that they owned and grew crops. In the mid-19th century, a group of businessmen located in nearby Chattanooga began making decisions about how to run Lawrenceburg. They wanted it to be a centers of culture and commerce. This group of men called themselves the Postmasters Board. Because they controlled much of the town's wealth, they decided that Lawrenceburg should become an important railroad junction. They also wanted to make sure that Lawrenceburg had a strong military presence so that it could protect itself from attack by neighboring towns. The Postmasters Board made several decisions which had a significant impact on the development of Lawrenceburg. One decision was to build a courthouse and jail in downtown Lawrenceburg. This building served as both a courthouse and police department until 1892 when it was replaced by the present Main Street Courthouse which is still in use today. Another decision made by the Postmasters Board was to expand education services inLawrenceburgh throughthe establishment ofa public school system anda high school. In 1881, postmaster Jno Haggerty founded what is now known as Haggerty College which offered undergraduate level courses in business administration, law, engineering, agriculture and natural sciences among other disciplines In 1892, another important decision was made when it was decided to name the town after General James Giddings who had helped lead Union forces during World War II subsequent growth led to increased infrastructure needs such as more schools (four were built between 1893-1896),health care facilities (including one hospital),and even an airport which opened in 1957
Lawrenceburg was founded in 1809 by General James Wilkinson and his family. The town was named after General Wilkinson's brother-in-law, Lawrence County. The first settler in Lawrenceburg was John Stroud, who arrived in 1794. In 1811, the town had a population of only 10 people. But by 1830, Lawrenceburg had a population of 100 people and became the county seat of Marshall County. In 1847, the town was renamed to honor General Joshua Lawrence, who had been killed during the Mexican–American War. Theodus Baptist Church located in downtown Lawrenceburg is one of the oldest religious buildings in Tennessee and has been on the property since it was built in 1848.
