La Vergne is named after Laertes, the son of Aenelus and Lavinia. The first settler in La Vergne was Jedediah Hargrave, who came from Vermont in 1792. The first post office in La Vergne was established in 1814. In 1899, a sawmill and gristmill were built by George Crouch near the current intersection of Elm and Hicks roads. This mill continued to be operated until it closed down in 1903. The railroad reached LaVergne through what is now rural areas of Lumpkin County on October 6, 1852, when the Memphis & Nashville Railroad extended its line from Chattanooga to meet at LaVergne Depot. In 1865, a new station was built on High Street (present day Elm Street). Lumberjacks were responsible for much of the development that took place around LaVergne during Prohibition period because they were able to get cheap labor for their mills and other businesses. However, many residents lost their jobs during prohibition as well as during World War II when production stopped due to shortage of materials due to war efforts across Europe and North America. Today, many businesses still operate within the town including breweries such as Pabst Brewing Company and First Tennessee Brewery; restaurants such as Peanut Buttercup's Bistro and Moe's Tavern; service agencies such as Home Health Services; antique stores; an ice cream truck; and an amusement park known as Universal City Fairground which opened in 1951

La Vergne is a small town in Tennessee, located about 25 miles northeast of Memphis. LaVergne was founded by brothers Isaac and Caleb LaVergne in 1810, and became an incorporated town in 1837. The LaVergnes were the first white settlers in what is now eastern Tennessee. They were followed by other pioneers, including David Beattie and his family, who founded Decatur County in 1840. In 1868, when the state of Tennessee was created, LaVergne became one of its twelve counties. The population of La Vergne peaked at over 10,000 during World War II; however, it has since declined to around 7600 today. The town was originally built on a salt lick that overlooked the confluence of the Elk and Susquehanna rivers. Today only a few foundations remain from this early period of development. Over time, however, La Vergne grew into an important agricultural community with many businesses and churches. The city of Memphis began to increase in population and size around the turn of the century; however, due to land values being higher in eastern Tennessee than in western Tennessee (where La Vergne lay), lavergnese businesses continued to flourish until the late 20th century. Today there are several heritage-preserving buildings remaining from early days such as the original courthouse (which remains operable) or storehouses used by local farmers during early years when their crops were grown on larger tracts of land than they have today.
