In addition to its duties as a harbor patrol station, the coast guardstation also provides law enforcement services for the community.
La Vergne is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. La Vergne has a history dating back to 1881 when it was founded as a railway station on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. It became an incorporated village in 1907 and then a town in 1933. La Vergne is located within the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The community of LaVergne developed around the railroad station, which served as its nucleus from 1881 until 1907 when it merged with nearby Greeneville to form LaVergne-Greeneville. In 1933, LaVergne became an incorporated village under the name of "Vergennes". In 1974, it reverted to its original name of "La Vergnes". According to the 2010 census, laVergne has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,098 people residing in laVergne. The Coast Guard's mission is to protect the nation's coasts and waters from danger, and to provide humanitarian assistance when necessary. In 1879, a group of officers from New York City's Police Department decided to form a coast guard unit in response to the increasing dangers posed by piracy and smuggling on America's seas. The first members of the Coast Guard were sworn in on November 4th, 1879. At that time, it was thought that a coastal guard unit would be little more than an onlooker during times of peace while a larger force was needed for defense against potential threats at sea. However, as America entered World War II, the Coast Guard saw its largest deployment ever with over 100,000 men and women serving in various roles including rescuing downed pilots; fighting Nazi submarines; and helping evacuate Americans stranded on ships at sea. During peacetime, the Coast Guard focuses its efforts on law enforcement activities such as patrolling beaches and ports; stopping drugs smugglers and other criminals; administering search & rescue services;andresponding to emergencies like hurricanes or earthquakes. In times of conflict or emergency, however, the Coast Guardsmen are called upon to help out their counterparts from other agencies such as FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) or Homeland Security (U.S.) In recent years there have also been calls for increased involvement by naval vessels in coastal security operations - something that has yet to materialize but could one day become reality given advances in technology. Despite some challenges faced along the way - most notably budget cuts which have impacted both manpower levels and funding - the Coast Guard is still considered one of America’s most effective public safety organizations today. The town had a population of only 100 people when it was first established. La Vergne has since grown to over 2,000 residents. La Vergne is known for its peach orchards, which are the most popular fruit crop in the United States. LaVergne also has a small manufacturing industry that produces items such as shoes and appliances. In addition to its agricultural products, LaVergne is also home to two churches, one of which is the largest denominational church in Hardin County.
The LaVergne area was first settled in the early 1800s. The first settlers were a group of Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1802. They built a small cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River. In 1812, Congress passed an act that designated this area as part of Tennessee. The new territory included land east of the Cumberland River, which became known as Hamilton County. In 1815, a courthouse and jail were built in La Vergne. The town was named after General James McHenry, who had helped lead America into war against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1822, La Vergne was incorporated as a village. There were only twelve residents in 1830 when it was destroyed by fire. During the Civil War, La Vergne served as a Union military post. On October 12, 1862, General Don Carlos Buell surrendered at LaVergne Station after a nine-week campaign that ended with his defeat at Chattanooga。 After the war, La Vergne slowly regained its lost population and began to develop into an agricultural center. In 1926, Hurricane Hazel caused extensive damage to trees and homes in central Tennessee and northern Alabama; however, no fatalities occurred within lavergnate area due to storm surge or flooding from high water levels..
