The history of artisan coffee in La Vergne, TN begins with the founding of The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in 1901 by two Dutchmen, Cornelius Vanderbilt and his son Cornelius Vanderbilt II. At the time, this was one of the first coffee stores in the area and it soon became known for its quality beans and delicious coffee drinks. In 1954, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf merged with another local business, The Koffee Klatch Café, which would later become one of Tennessee’s most popular tourist destinations. Today, there are still a few Original Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf locations left in La Vergne but they are all now open to the public as part of The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Museum. Over time, different members of the Vanderbilt family continued to run their businesses and contribute their unique skills to make sure that each store maintained a high level of quality and customer service. In 1992, Cornelius Vanderbilt III passed away and his son Cornelius IV took over running the business. Under his guidance, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf began to expand its operations internationally and opened new branches throughout Europe and South America. In 2006, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf merged with Keurig International Inc., creating one of America’s largest coffee companies. La Vergne is a small town in Robertson County, Tennessee. The population was 2,922 at the 2010 census. La Vergne is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. It is located on the Cumberland River and has a rich history dating back to 1819 when it was known as "Newburgh." La Vergne was incorporated as a city in 1907 and became an official state seat in 1913. In 1965, La Vergne was merged with nearby Chancton to form the new city of Chancton-La Vergne. The name "La Vergne" comes from two French words meaning "valley of verdure." The original settlers arrived around 1800 and named their village after Saint-Vincent de la Veraige, one of the six bishops who founded Rome in 753 AD. There are several theories about where the name originated: One theory suggests that Lavergne may have been derived from a local stream called Blackwater which empties into the Cumberland River near present-day Chancton. Other sources suggest that Laverge may have come from Lavargee or Lavarre (both meaning 'green forest'). Regardless of its origin, these names stuck and were used until 1906 when Chancton-LaVergnage was formally established as its own municipality. Chancton had been established as an agricultural community by early 19th century farmers who grew corn, wheat, hay, cotton and other crops on land that still stands today within sight of LaVergnage Municipal Airport (LAV). At first there were only five families residing in Chancton when it became an actual municipality; by 1910 there were over 100 residents living within one mile of downtownChancton! Today's downtown contains more than 50 businesses including banks, restaurants and nightlife options along with housing for up to 350 people! Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid filmed their movie adaptation of West Side Story here in 1967 before moving away to California!

The town of La Vergne was founded in 1834 by James C. Robertson. The first post office was established in 1835, and the town became a village in 1838. La Vergne was named for English General Sir John LaVergne who died in 1792. The first settler in La Vergne was Dr. George Witherspoon, who came to the area from Georgia about 1800. In 1824, another doctor, Dr. Hugh Blair, arrived from New York and began practicing medicine here. In 1830, a school was built on the site of present-day City Hall and it served as the primary educational institution until 1850 when a new school building was erected on Main Street. In 1865, the First Methodist Episcopal Church was built on Market Street and it remained in use until 1907 when it burned down. In 1870, there were only 157 residents living in LaVergne; however, by 1880 there were 1125 people residing here with an average income of $8 per week. By 1900, LaVergne had grown to over 3000 residents with an average income of $25 per week and its growth continued through World War I when it reached 4000 residents with an average income of $50 per week During World War II,LaVergne experienced significant growth due to its proximity to Nashville which saw significant production changes because of wartime military activity including production at Nissan Motors Plant #2 which employed nearly 1000 men during 1944-1945 alone
