In 1861 Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest decided to attack Union forces at Fort Donelson after learning that Union generals were planning an assault on Johnson City (which later evolved into Battle Creek) near Chattanooga whichdestroys much civilian life along the Cumberland River Valley so Forrest ordered his army commander John Dupleix not to march on Fort Donelson but instead march northwest towards Nashville to support General Beauregard's attempt to relieve Chattanooga from Federal control In 1862 Confederate General Floyd Pemberton attacked Union forces at Missionary Ridge northeast of Knoxville while Union General Ambrose Burnside defended Chattanooga against an attempted Confederate invasion; this led directly to Civil War victory for both sides Aftermath: Upon cessation of hostilities on April 9th 1865, all federal property within five miles (8 km) of any battlefield was seized by Confederate government including all property owned by private citizens excepting downtown Knoxvillenewspersons who received compensation The first African American born in America resident inKnoxville was Obadiah Harrell who lived next door to Drayton Sanders until Sanders moved out after feeling racially profiled
