There has been coffee cultivation in Knoxville, Tennessee for over a hundred years. Coffee beans were first grown here in the early 1800s and early 1900s, when the area was part of the Mexican territory of Texas. The local community of Knoxville became known for its quality coffee beans, and it continued to be a major player in the coffee industry until about 1930. From then on, production shifted to other areas of the United States. However, Knoxville still produces some excellent cup of Joe today. The first mention of coffee being grown in Knoxville is from 1827, when an American trader named John Green recorded that he had purchased 25 pounds of ground coffee from a group of Mexicans near present-day downtown Knoxville. In 1832, James Foard established a permanent business at what is now Second Street and East Main Street in downtown Knoxville. Foard's Coffee House was one of the earliest businesses to sell roasted coffee on premises. The success of Foard's Coffee House led to other stores opening up throughout the city, including Brown & Williamson's Merchants Arcade on South Main Street between First and Second Streets in 1836; Wm Morrison & Bros.' grocery store at Third and Fifth Streets eastward from Broadway between First and Second Streets; GEOFFREY MATTHEWS COFFEE HOUSE (now FRANKLIN'S) at Fourth and State streets southward from Broadway; JAMES BALDWIN COFFEEHOUSE (now THE KNOXVILLE BREWERY) at Fourth Avenue northward from High Street; WILLIAM KNIGHT COFFEEHOUSE (now PANASONIC) at Eighth Avenue northward from High Street; ANDERSON PAINTER MALL (now PEPPERS MARKET/MEMPHIS HOMES) on Elmira Place eastward from Court Avenue between First and second streets; THOMAS GREEN WASTE COMPANY (now THRASHER POWDER COMPANY) on MainStreetwestofBroadwaybetweenFirstandSecondStreetsin1841; ALLEN PARKER MUSEUM OF CULTURE ON STATE STREET westofBroadwaybetweenThirdandFourth Avenuesin1851). In 1830-31, Andrew Painter opened his own roasting business along Elmira Place east of Court Ave., which became known as "The Painter Mall." Painter also started distributing roasted coffee through his businesses around town. In 1840-41, he built a large warehouse next to his business located on State St., which served as headquarters for many years for both Allen Parker Museum of Culture and Forrester Glass Company before being turned into apartments in 1957. In 1845-46 John Southerland set up shop along Cherry Lane just outside city limits in what is now West Memphis Village. At this time Chattanooga already had several large roasters such as Peet's Coffeehouse Manufacturing Workshops (later renamed Peet's Coffee), The Whitfield Store Roasters ( later renamed United Press), Asbury Park Brewery (?,founded by George Armstrong Cagle ), Samuel Adams Brewing Company (), etc.), so there was competition among TN mills trying to get into the coffee market share with their Kentucky mates back home EPRWA (). Knoxville is a city located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. The population was 134,813 at the 2010 census, making it the 11th largest city in Tennessee and the third-largest in the Knox County area. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The first known inhabitants of what is now Knoxville were Native American nations that operated along both sides of the Cumberland River before European exploration began in 1619. In 1795, General James Robertson founded a trading post on an island in that river, which became known as Robertson's Island after him. The United States acquired this land from Great Britain for $5 million during the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson led a military campaign against Native Americans called "The Insurrection." As a result of this event, Congress passed an act to establish Fort Donelson as a strategic stronghold against Indian aggression and protect trade routes between Nashville and Louisville. Construction began on this fort in 1817 and continued until 1837 when it was abandoned due to lack of funding and modern technology being available at that time. On July 9, 1861, Confederate forces under Lieutenant Colonel John Custer attacked Union forces under Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer near present-day Yorktown Heights Cemetery; this battle is considered one of America's deadliest Civil War battles because more than 600 people died including 400 Confederate soldiers and 30 Union officers (including Jackson). On December 14, 1862 General Robert Ewell ordered his army to cross over Chickamauga Creek into northern Georgia to attack Atlanta; however, his force was defeated by Union troops commanded by Major General Joseph Hooker at Second Battle Of Bull Run on September 29th; leading many Confederates off balance and giving Union troops an opportunity to capture large quantities of supplies and prisoners while inflicting heavy losses on their side). In 1865, Knoxville became capital of Tennessee following its annexation by that state from Virginia following The Tennessean editorials' decision not to run for office jointly with Richmond because they felt their editorial stance would be better represented within their new home state’s capital city—an event commonly referred to as “Volstead” or “The Greenback Revolution” due to then-Governor Don Reynolds’ role as leader thereof. On December 12th 1865General Nathan Bedford Forrest surrendered his army at Chattanooga after two days fought without loss when he learned Federal armies were surrounding his position; this event marks one point where barbecue pioneer George Foreman met his Waterloo moment while serving as Forrest’s personal chef during this period—the first person ever arrested for cooking food for Confederate generals during The Civil War era!
